Job Description
JOB SUMMARY:
Regular/contract instructors participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs, courses and other experiences that will directly result in the educational growth of the students and support advancement of the visions, missions and values of the college and District. This position will have primary responsibility for teaching the state-of-the-art program in Cellular, Molecular, and Evolutionary Biology (for biology majors) lecture and lab for the department, and that will include assisting in the development, implementation and articulation of curriculum, and assessing student learning outcomes. The secondary responsibility will be teaching Principles of Biology (for non-biology majors). The department has a commitment to the use of technology in education and to integrate curriculum between related scientific disciplines including chemistry, physics, earth sciences, and engineering wherever possible. It is expected that this position will support and help to grow the department in this area. This position may include a combination of day and evening assignments, large lectures and labs and is being offered by a college strongly committed to the "open door" concept serving a diverse student population. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: APPLICANTS MUST MEET ONE OF THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:
Master's in any biological science OR
Bachelor's in any biological science AND Master's in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science OR
the equivalent.

CHARACTERISTICS OF ASSIGNMENT:
- Teach Cellular, Molecular and Evolutionary Biology (Bio 230) and Principles of Biology (Biology 120).
- Maintain, edit and update the Biology 230 lab manual, including working with technical staff to plan lab preps and schedules and printing/graphics and the bookstore to produce the documents.
- Work with the department chair(s) to facilitate the Student Learning Outcome processes and any necessary updating of course outlines.
- Develop new Lecture and Laboratory teaching materials and curriculum for Cellular, Molecular, and Evolutionary Biology (Biology 230) as needed.
- Participate in Department meetings and decision-making.
- Participate in the shared governance process and be willing to serve on college committees.
- Advise and mentor students regarding degree requirements and career opportunities in biology and science.
- Assist in articulation of courses with transfer institutions.
- Provide academic assistance to the students outside of class (e.g., during office hours).
NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Academic preparation for teaching and assisting with implementation of curriculum in Cellular, Molecular, and Evolutionary Biology, and General Biology, or closely related in both lecture and laboratory settings.
2. Experience with teaching major's level cellular biology, molecular biology, and genetics from an evolutionary perspective, as well as biotechnology techniques and microscopy in a laboratory setting.
3. Teaching experience in Cellular, Molecular, and Evolutionary Biology and General Biology at the college level or equivalent.
4. Evidence of a strong commitment to remain current in cellular/molecular/evolutionary biology and associated sciences.
5. Demonstrated ability to apply current learning theory and national science educational standards to develop, assess and implement innovative methods of science instruction.
6. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
7. Demonstrated commitment to work effectively and professionally with colleagues at all levels.
8. Applicants must demonstrate sensitivity to, understanding of, and skills and ability to motivate students from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic and language backgrounds.
9. Evidence of leadership skills (implementing/ assessing SLOs, writing new lab curriculum/protocols, outreach) that will contribute to overall department growth and success.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Academic preparation should include college courses in molecular biology, cellular biology, evolutionary biology, molecular genetics, and/or microbiology.
2. Teaching experience with compound and dissecting microscopes, student spectrophotometers, water baths, incubators, electrophoresis equipment for DNA, RNA and protein isolation and characterization and the basic principles of Northern, Southern and Western blot Hybridization. In addition, teaching experience with Recombinant DNA technology, Chi-Square analysis of segregation data, and basic topics in Bioinformatics using web-based search engines such as BLAST, and other related biotechnology equipment in biology laboratories.
3. Use of computers, Internet, and other technology in an instructional setting.
4. Knowledge of basic data organization, analysis, and graphing software.
5. Experience with the use of laboratory equipment and instruments common to biology teaching environments.
