Job Overview

The College of Nursing at the University of Cincinnati is seeking to fill non-tenure, non-tenure earning full time Instructor Clinical position to support students in the Simulation and Skills Lab. This position will contribute to the College of Nursing’s mission of teaching, service, and scholarship. Non-Tenure Clinical Track positions in the College of Nursing address the university’s mission of teaching, service, and scholarship. Non-Tenure Clinical Track Faculty Members also may be assigned administrative responsibilities. Evidence should demonstrate a sustained and progressive movement toward excellence in teaching and deliberative efforts to improve student learning outcomes. The selected candidate will be hired as a 12-month faculty with year round teaching requirements.

Essential Functions
  • Supervise the daily operations of the simulation and skills labs to provide a wide variety of simulation-based learning activities.
  • Collaborates with Simulation Director to establish, review, and research policies, standard practices, and procedures related to the skills and simulation lab with a focus on continuous quality improvement.
  • In collaboration with Simulation Director, work with faculty as content expert to identify, and oversee the development of simulation-based learning experiences to meet student learning outcomes as related to course design.
  • In collaboration with the Simulation Operations Specialist, ensures maintenance of simulation manikins and other equipment in the skills and simulation lab; initiates repair, maintenance, maintains appropriate warranties and recommend future equipment and supply purchases.
  • Facilitate the adult learning process to create a psychologically safe climate to support learning across the curriculum and programs.
  • Researches, develops, updates, collaborates, and refines lab and clinical scenarios for the nursing programs based on student and faculty needs and reflective of Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice (INACSL, 2021).
  • Collaborates with course faculty in planning, designing, organizing, and facilitating lab and simulation activities to meet course objectives through the utilization of the skills and simulation lab activities.
  • Maintain relevant simulation-based education through the review of relevant journals, abstracts, and scientific literature including underlying educational theories.
  • Work/interact effectively with diverse population, showing respect and cultural sensitivity to ensure inclusivity and a sense of belonging in the simulation and skills labs.
  • Supervise students in the simulation lab setting and evaluate student attainment of competencies which may include skills check offs. Provide instruction, coaching, and assessment for students working on skills at designated times.
  • Orient faculty to laboratory procedures, policies, location and use of materials, and operation of equipment.
Essential Functions Continued
  • Work as a team member with faculty and staff to continue to develop faculty's simulation skills and to contribute to joint programs that promote the expansion of faculty's knowledge base.
  • Oversee open lab setting to reinforce class instruction of required skills while teaching critical thinking mastery and support students who need additional assistance with learning clinical skills including collaboration with faculty to facilitate remediation sessions.
  • Implement policies and procedures to ensure that the lab functions effectively.
  • Set up, operate, and maintain a variety of skills, lab equipment, and resources.
  • Ensure that lab set-up and breakdown occurs in a timely fashion to meet course needs and schedules as determined by pre-planning with faculty and following the student classroom schedules.
  • Coordinate and schedule the use of the lab in collaboration with faculty, student, and space availability.
  • In collaboration with the Simulation Operations Specialist monitors inventory and orders necessary supplies for the skills and simulation lab, including performing the annual inventory.
  • Conducts tours for internal/external stakeholders.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education

MSN required with a pathway to seeking doctorate.

Required Trainings/Certifications
  • Hold a valid unencumbered Ohio license as a Registered Nurse
  • CNEn or CNE certification with experience in higher education required.
Required Experience
  • 1 to 3 years experience in simulation and skills lab teaching, or combination of education and experience commensurate with the requirements of the position.
  • 3 to 5 years clinical experience required.
  • Formal simulation-based training is ideal.
  • Experience working with grant teams to create and facilitate simulation-based learning experiences.
Additional Qualifications Considered
  • Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE)- Current Certification or eligibility to obtain certification within one year preferred.
  • Ability to understand and utilize advanced technical simulation lab equipment and communicate that knowledge to others as appropriate.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.
  • Ability to be generally present and available throughout the year during the normal business hours of the college and may occasionally have work obligations outside of the college's normal business hours.
