Overview

Princeton University Library (PUL) is seeking four (4) Special Collections Project Cataloging Specialists to join its Cataloging and Metadata Services team (CaMS). CaMS is a multidisciplinary group of talented individuals working collaboratively to support the research of the Princeton University community. This includes providing efficient, thorough, and accurate access to the Library's holdings in many formats and languages.

This is a full-time, three-year term position with the possiblity of renewal.

Princeton University Library is one of the world's leading research libraries, supporting a diverse community of 5,200 undergraduates, 2,700 graduate students, 1,200 faculty members, and many visiting scholars. Its holdings include more than 7 million printed volumes, 85 thousand manuscripts, 2 million non-print items, and extensive collections of digital text, data, and images.

 

 

The Library employs a dedicated and knowledgeable staff of more than 300 staff working in a large central library, 9 specialized branches, and 3 storage facilities.

Responsibilities
  • Catalog acquisitions for the rare book collections of the Marquand Library of Art and Archaeology, and for Special Collections. Cataloging must respond to specialist client needs as identified by curators and selectors. Both item-level and aggregate/collection level cataloging practices will be applied depending on circumstances. 
  • Create and modify authority records in the Library of Congress/Name Authority File for personal and corporate names used in the cataloging.
  • Edit existing records migrated from an earlier standalone Graphic Arts database for consistency with project practices.
  • Collaborate with related units to improve intellectual and physical control of rare book collections.
Qualifications

Required

  • Graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • Reading knowledge of one or more non-English languages (especially French, Spanish, Russian, Latin, and German) relevant to the collections, as applied in cataloging or academic coursework.
  • Minimum three years of cataloging experience including substantial original cataloging.
  • Working knowledge of the MARC format and bibliographic standards (RDA, AACR2), name authority records and the NAF, cataloging rules for inputting and format of bibliographic and authority data
  • Experience using collaborative and office productivity tools like Google Drive, MS Office, Slack, etc.
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and data/metadata formats.
  • Analytical and communication skills.
  • Problem-solving ability as demonstrated in resource description.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively on projects with a variety of colleagues.
