About the College/Unit/Department:

University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Research works with instruction and extension to support Georgia’s $75 billion food and fiber industry, the largest sector of the state’s economy. CAES scientists solve agricultural and environmental problems across the state, the nation and the world.

Our diverse research portfolio is based on a well-integrated blend of fundamental and translational research. We are known nationally and internationally as leaders in poultry science, plant breeding, genetics and genomics, food safety and entomology. We are home to internationally recognized Centers of Excellence in plant breeding and genomics; food quality, food safety, and product development; and animal genetics, reproductive technology, and nutrition.

Our statewide network of Experiment Stations and Research and Education Centers cover more than 11,000 acres and provide unprecedented opportunities for problem-solving research and technology transfer to agricultural producers and businesses.

UGA in general is a leader in technology commercialization based on university research. For the past 5 years, UGA has ranked among the top 5 of all U.S. universities for the total number of licenses and options executed. Typically about 75% of the university’s licensing revenue is generated by the CAES, primarily from royalties associated with patented plant cultivars.

Position Summary:

Only current tenured Professors or those who will hold the rank of full Professor effective in July 2023 (FY24) or August 2023 (AY23-24) in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of Georgia, are eligible to apply for this position.

The University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences invites nominations and applications for the position of Associate Dean for Research. This position is located on the Athens campus but will have state-wide responsibilities for all research programs. The College receives significant federal, state and private support for research and has one of the strongest research programs of any College of Agriculture in the United States. In the most recent National Taiwan University rankings, the College was ranked 8th among USA programs in Plant and Animal Science.

The Associate Dean for Research of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences will work closely with the Dean and Director and will be delegated the authority for supervision and fiscal management of research programs within the College as well as allied programs in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences. This authority includes administration of all research personnel, budget planning, allocation of funds, acquisition of external research funds, program development, participating in USDA/NIFA research planning and evaluating activities, and maintaining liaison with USDA/ARS, and promoting the visibility of research in the agricultural, food, and environmental sciences to the citizens of Georgia. In addition, the Associate Dean is expected to work with members of the agricultural industry and University community in identifying the most crucial challenges in agricultural research and developing plans to address these problems. The Associate Dean is administratively responsible to the Dean and Director of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences of the University of Georgia and will work closely with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and the Associate Dean for Cooperative Extension, the Assistant Dean of the Tifton Campus, the Director of the Griffin Campus, the Senior Director of Finance and Administration, and Academic Department Heads to ensure a coordination of efforts within the College.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications.

The applicant should be capable of giving aggressive state-wide and national leadership in pursuit of quality agricultural research programs and cooperating and working closely with the Associate Deans.
