Job Description:

The physics program at Southern Utah University (SUU) is seeking a tenure track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. This is a 9-month, full-time appointment, with the desired start date of August 16, 2023.

As part of the Department of Physical Science, the physics program emphasizes experiential learning through engaging course design, undergraduate research, and faculty mentorship. The physics program is integral to multiple degrees across campus and offers students an increasingly popular minor option. Internal funding is available each semester to support faculty scholarly efforts, undergraduate research, and course innovation. SUU supports integrative, interdisciplinary collaboration and encourages the pursuit of external funding sources. The department operates the Ashcroft Astronomical Observatory within minutes of campus. The University is a founding member of the Great Basin Observatory Consortium.

SUU is a primarily undergraduate teaching institution with a growing enrollment surpassing 12,000 students. SUU's location in Cedar City is surrounded by national parks and extensive state and federal public lands. Our location offers a variety of outdoor activities, including a substantial network of hiking and mountain biking trails. SUU is home to the Utah Shakespeare Festival and the Southern Utah Museum of Art. Cedar City is situated 3.5 hours south of Salt Lake City and 2.5 hours north of Las Vegas.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Teach diverse physics laboratories or lectures (i.e. Elementary Physics, Astronomy, General Physics, Physics for Scientists and Engineers, Quantum Physics) at the undergraduate level.
  • Manage and maintain laboratory equipment, and ensure its proper setup, function, and storage.
  • Conduct research that enhances instruction and integrates undergraduate students.
  • Work effectively as a member of the Physical Science Department.
  • Other assignments as determined by the department chair and dean.


Education and Experience Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications-
  • A Ph.D. in Physics or a closely related field from an institutionally accredited university. Must demonstrate the potential for or have a record of achievement in teaching lower division undergraduate physics courses. ABD will be given full consideration if a degree is conferred by August 7, 2023.
  • Demonstrated commitment and a clear plan to mentor undergraduate students in every stage of the research process, from developing ideas to presenting/publishing results related to the candidate's academic specialty.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively with colleagues in an undergraduate academic setting

In accordance with Utah State Code 53B-1-110, appointment to this position is contingent upon the successful passing of a background check.

Preferred Qualifications-
  • A Ph.D. in any physics discipline or related field will be considered.
  • Those demonstrating an ability to enhance our program and current offerings through unique skills or aptitudes including instrumental expertise and maintenance, physics education and outreach efforts, or experience in curriculum and laboratory development will be given special consideration.
  • The candidate should be willing to teach in the late afternoon and conduct laboratories into the early evening a few times weekly.
