GENERAL PURPOSE: Under the direction of the Mission Bay Aquatic Center Director, the MBAC Programs Manager is responsible for developing and executing the MBAC instructional and rental programs. Duties include managing the safety and quality control of programs, strategic planning, development and supervision of full and part-time personnel, curriculum review and development, creating and presenting participation and financial reports, and supporting youth programs and events. All MBAC full-time staff also serve as “Duty” persons that manage and supervise the facility and all programs at scheduled times.



ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Develop and execute instructional and rental programs of the Mission Bay Aquatic Center
  • Ensure safety protocols are developed and implemented
  • Construct and execute budgets for all programs under supervision
  • Develop and administer long-term strategic plans for the instructional and rental programs
  • Manage and develop the full-time Instructional Supervisors and their Program Assistants
  • Evaluate equipment and program improvements and innovations to enhance operations for efficiency and effectiveness
  • Produce and analyze participation, financial, safety, service, and other internal and external data reports
  • Communicate effectively with MBAC staff on updates or changes in operations of the instructional and rental programs
  • Supervise all daily operational functions of MBAC when assigned as “duty person” including but not limited to ensuring safety, providing excellent customer service, handling and reporting customer and employee injuries, opening and closing the facility, and performing other operational functions as needed
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned



Programs
  • Manage the development, planning, coordination, and execution of MBAC instructional programs and rentals
  • Ensure that programs are inclusive and conducted in accordance with approved rules and regulations that address participant safety as the top priority
  • Create instructional experiences that produce learning opportunities, knowledge, and skills through a well-developed curriculum and quality instruction
  • Ensure that rental operations provide fun participant experiences that focus on safety, education, and skill development including proper use and care of equipment
  • Develop detailed written class curriculums for staff reference
  • Support the Instructional Supervisors and Programs Assistants with staff development and retention
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of programs and classes using participant feedback and address needs for improvement
  • Develop program improvements, additions, or alternatives for revenue growth
  • Implement risk management/safety plan, including regular review of injury/accident reports and changes required to avoid reoccurrence
  • Establish a budget for programs under your supervision and execute with adjustments as needed
  • Evaluate and delegate cancellations, postponements, and rescheduling of instructional classes based on weather, water quality, equipment, and other factors
Minimum Requirements
Education:

  • Four year degree from an accredited college or university preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience:
  • Significant demonstrated experience in watersport instruction, supervision, and program management
  • Must have excellent technical skills or excellent understanding of a minimum of two of the following sports: sailing, wakesports, paddling, and surfing
  • Must have a strong background in boat handling and operation of powerboats
  • Excellent boat trailering skills
  • Sailing skills and experience preferred
  • Demonstrated experience serving a diverse population of customers
  • Experience working in a university environment preferred
  • Experience with the needs and requirements of patrons with disabilities and experience with ADA guidelines preferred

Licenses & Certifications Requirements
  • Red Cross Lifeguarding certification
  • California Boater Card
  • Valid Driver License
  • US Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential
  • US Sailing Instructor or Instructor Trainer certifications preferred
  • American Canoe Association Instructor preferred
  • Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor preferred

Must comply with SDSU COVID-19 vaccine policies and procedures.



Salary Range: $72,000 - $80,000 per year

  • Must have strong English language skills and the ability to read, write, and verbally communicate at a level appropriate to the duties of the position
  • Ability to operate a computer with proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Apps
  • Ability to gather and organize data, draw logical conclusions, and discern implications
  • Well organized with the ability to effectively multi-task, prioritize work, problem solve, make decisions, and meet scheduled deadlines under pressure
  • Must be self-motivated and perform with minimal direction and supervision
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to relate and communicate effectively with a diverse population of students, staff, faculty, colleagues, and guests
  • Ability to present a consistent, positive approach to students and all internal and external contacts by being courteous, respectful, helpful, and cooperative at all times
  • Commitment to a high standard of safety and ability to communicate and train safety policies and procedures to staff
  • Strong ability to lead and motivate part-time student employees
  • Ability to interpret and communicate policies and procedures
  • Ability to adapt to and work in an environment of constant change, growth, and frequent interruptions



SCHEDULE & WORKING CONDITIONS

This is a full-time position scheduled to work in person including some weekends. Flexibility and willingness to work long and irregular hours and days, including early mornings, evenings, and some weekends is required.

Work conditions occur indoors and outdoors, therefore requiring exposure to a variety of elements. The work environment will involve exposure to water, salt water, dust, grease, sand, sun, wind, rain, weather, seaweed, sea grass, hazardous chemicals, and other industrial hazards.

This position requires occasional business-related driving. A valid California Driver License and proof of automobile insurance is required.
