The University of Colorado School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry has just welcomed their new Department Chair, C. Neill Epperson, MD and is in the process of growing the Department of Psychiatry with new programs and expanding existing programs.

Nature of Work

Medical Midlevel providers employed by the University of Colorado to provide care to patients in the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo shall be responsible for providing medical care to the patients of the hospital.

While psychiatric providers are considered University of Colorado contract employees within the Colorado Mental Health Hospitals at Pueblo, they are expected to adhere to the rules, regulations, and training requirements of the Colorado Mental Health Hospitals at Pueblo as documented in their administrative regulations and clinical policies. Prior to beginning clinical work within the Colorado Mental Health Hospitals at Pueblo, providers are expected to attend and complete any and all training requirements requested by the Training Academy, including a background investigation, urine drug screening, and completion of a self-defense course.

Please note, this is an open rank position and could be categorized as Senior Instructor or Senior Clinical instructor based on percentage of employment. A Senior Instructor is considered 100% to 50% employment, a Senior Clinical Instructor is 49% employment and below.

There may be an opportunity to work at additional clinical and/or research settings based on skillset and program needs. Additional clinics in this Division include: Colorado Mental Health Institute at Fort Logan, Colorado Department of Corrections, Forensic Program.

Examples of Work Performed

The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
  • Provides medical assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients. Performs preadmission screening of patients being referred by outside agencies; admission health assessments and writes admission orders.
  • Evaluates and treats patients scheduled for medical clinic. Performs annual health assessments. Performs urgent evaluations and treats unscheduled patients in medical clinical or on patient's unit, and arranges disposition.
  • Works with various members of the psychiatry treatment team to engage the patient in the treatment of their medical illnesses. Collaborates with other members of the medical staff and outside consulting physicians in the evaluation and treatment of patients. Refers patients to other medical providers and/or hospitals as necessary.
  • Communicates effectively with team members and other hospital staff.
  • Follows proper documentation policies including medical necessity for patient treatments. Remains up-to-date with documentation as described in policy.
  • Provides staff education, instruction and mentoring. Serves on various committees to assist the hospital in its mission and goals.
  • Responds to medical emergencies and code zeros within the hospital while on duty.
  • Complies with Medical Staff Bylaws and Medical Staff Rules & Regulations.
  • Maintains active clinical staff privileges and current license.
  • Performs other duties as reasonably requested.
  • Provides clinical coverage to colleagues as needed.

Salary Offered or Salary Range

The hiring rate (or budgeted rate) for this position has been established at :

Senior Instructor: $121,800

Senior Clinical Instructor: $121,800

The above salary rate represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications

Senior Instructor/Senior Clinical Instructor:
  • Applicant must possess current, valid licensure as an Advanced Practice Nurse / Nurse Practitioner from the Colorado Board of Nursing or Current Colorado State Physician Assistant License.
  • Applicant must have full prescriptive authority (RXN) as issued by the State of Colorado (DORA).

Preferred Qualifications
    Experience managing chronic medical conditions as an APN / PA. Experience providing medical care in a correctional environment. Experience providing emergency medical coverage, performing basic life support and life-saving measures.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

To be successful in this position, candidates will need the following:
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with faculty, staff, students, alumni, industry and the public.
  • Knows and applies best practices in diversity and inclusion practices or has knowledge and understands cultural differences.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, residents, students, alumni, and administrative personnel at all levels including outside organizations and the public.
