As a member of the Facilities Operation, the Fire Alarm Technician will assume responsibility for the installation, analyzing, testing, repairing and maintaining all the campus-wide fire alarms and carbon monoxide devices within the buildings and dormitories at Princeton University. Any repairs or tests that are performed will be in accordance with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) guidelines as adopted into code by the state and local municipalities. Along with Site Protection, all work will be coordinated with the Department of Public Safety and the Fire Marshall's office.

Responsibilities

• Perform installation, preventive maintenance, repair and regulatory compliance testing to campus Life Safety and facilities related systems. Includes responsibility to troubleshoot, maintain and provide repairs to Life Safety Systems, including fire alarms and fire suppression systems. Testing of systems will be performed in accordance with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) guidelines as adopted into code by the state and local municipalities.
• Respond immediately to any emergency or urgent events involving fire alarms, fire suppression, Life Safety, Access Control, environmental and other facilities related events. Troubleshoot, provide emergency repairs and coordinate response and related communications as needed.
• Assist Site Protection Technical Review Representatives and special projects coordinator with plan review on new and renovation projects. If needed, meet with outside contractors to answer questions and assist with acceptance testing.
• As necessary, carry out shop work assignments and assist tradesmen with critical and urgent shop tasks. Assist in other duties as assigned.
• After-Hour Emergency Response–Must be able to respond to after normal business hour emergencies and incidents as needed, and on short notice;

• Good working knowledge of Simplex Networked Fire Alarm Systems and be able to work safely and effectively on high and low voltage fire alarm systems.
• Strong working knowledge of the N.F.P.A codes involving fire alarms and water-based fire protection systems such as N.F.P.A. 13, 72, 20 and 25.
• Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing. Able to read, understand and interpret construction related documents (drawings, submittals, technical manuals and specifications) in order to determine equipment and materials required or appropriate methods of installation.
• Must be able to investigate routine and emergency problems with life safety systems and evaluate alternative solutions, perform repairs and provide recommendations to the supervisor.
• Must be able to properly and safely use the hand and power tools of the trade and carry out all tasks expected of a fire alarm technician.
• Must be able to work independently on a fixed shift schedule and rotating, mandatory on-call (service emergencies, nights, weekends). 
• Must have a thorough understanding of all current safe work practices and awareness of applicable OSHA regulations.
• Strong knowledge of the following computer skills: Microsoft Office 2010; HyperTerminal and computerized maintenance management systems (i.e., Maximo), and must be proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word and Adobe Acrobat Doc.
• Must have a valid driver's license.

Education Requirements:

• Possess a High School Diploma (or GED) and related vocational education in the installation, troubleshooting and repairs of Fire Alarm Systems.
• NICET Level II or higher certification required. Candidates who do not carry certification may still apply. However, if selected, the successful candidate MUST achieve NICET Level II or higher certification in Fire Alarm Systems within the first year of employment, and keep current through ongoing professional development in Fire Alarm Systems through active participation in NFPA & NICET Fire Alarm CEU courses.
• OSHA 10 certification

• Work outdoors in a variety of temperatures and environmental conditions.
• Possess ability to work at heights, full range of body motions and physical agility, and ability to maintain balance.
• Will be required to work on and around live electrical equipment, AC and DC. Will also be required to work on and around rotating machinery and other mechanical systems.
