Nature of Work
The Cole Lab broadly uses large-scale genomics and other -omics datasets as a tool to explore diet's relationship with human health and disease. With a variety of computational and statistical approaches, the Cole lab aims to:
- Identify the genetic determinants of dietary intake to understand how our genes influence the foods we choose to eat via both direct (e.g. sensory pathways) and indirect (e.g. mediators such as socioeconomic status and body mass index) mechanisms. Elucidate the environmental and biological mechanisms of dietary intake and food metabolism and how inter-individual variation influences these processes and their downstream effects on health. Identify causal relationships between diet, lifestyle, and human health with a focus on cardiometabolic traits and diseases. Improve how dietary variables are captured and defined to increase their power as exposures, outcomes, and interactors in studies across many fields.
As a computational group, we work closely with experimentalists and clinicians to translate findings to the bench and bedside. We are a hybrid in-person/remote group, with flexibility as needed and in agreement with the PI.

15% Communicate ideas and findings
- Present research in progress at lab meetings, project meetings, and 1v1 PI meetings Submit abstracts and present results at local and (inter)national conferences Write and publish manuscripts Actively pursue fellowship awards and assist the PI in grant writing
5% Train and Mentor
- Write and share workflows and protocols Supervise and train graduate students and research associates
5% Administrative Duties
- Complete required research trainings Perform general administrative duties as requested by the PI
5% Career Development
- Attend career development seminars and networking events Complete an Individualized Development Plan (IDP) to be discussed with the PI annually Keep CV up to date
