Description
University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus

Department of Emergency Medicine

Post-doctoral Fellow

The University of Colorado Denver l Anschutz Medical Campus seeks individuals with demonstrated commitment to creating an inclusive learning and working environment. We value the ability to engage effectively with students, faculty and staff of diverse backgrounds.

Overall Description of Responsibility or Nature of Work

The Firearm Injury Prevention Initiative at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and Colorado School of Public Health is recruiting one outstanding early-career stage research investigator to undertake an intensive two- or three-year postdoctoral program of mentored, applied research focusing on the prevention of firearm suicide, including in high-risk military populations. The Initiative, led by Marian (Emmy) Betz, MD, MPH, has active lines of funding from federal sources and foundations. Current relevant projects involve: qualitative and quantitative methods; collaboration with firearm instructors, retailers and organizations; decision science; development and testing of messaging; and implementation of firearm injury prevention interventions in clinical and community settings. The projects engage a multi-disciplinary team of investigators and trainees, as well as collaborators across the country. Current and future projects involve examination of firearm suicide prevention in specific populations (e.g., active-duty military and Veterans; older adults with dementia; emergency department patients) and the general US public.

Areas of Responsibility / Scope of Research

The position will be awarded on a competitive basis to an individual who has completed a doctoral degree program (M.D., Ph.D., Dr.PH., or equivalent) and have demonstrated commitment and interest in firearm injury prevention research, either as their primary career focus or as an element of a broader research career. The primary age group of interest for this research funding and training opportunity is adults.

Our program of research for firearm suicide prevention will be the core activity of the fellowship. Specific areas of interest for research include adaptation of training and interventions for use in military and various clinical or community settings. Additional areas of general interest include the epidemiology of firearm suicide, risk and protective factors, and the effect of education or other interventions on firearm storage behaviors.

The fellow will collaborate in ongoing research that is being conducted as a component of this postdoctoral fellowship and will have an opportunity to collaborate both on ongoing projects within and through analyses of their own, all with mentoring by Dr. Betz and other study investigators. The specific content of the fellowship will be tailored to meet the goals and objectives of the fellow. The University of Colorado provides a robust program of seminars and other learning and teaching opportunities for postdoctoral scholars.
