Job Summary:

This is a full-time (1.0 FTE) position for a Laboratory Science Professional to work in the Bergman laboratory at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Our area of research is investigating how skeletal muscle lipids and adipose tissue in skeletal muscle relate to diabetes risk in vivo and in vitro. The position will primarily involve benchwork and supporting 2-3 NIH funded research studies. The duties and scope of work will evolve with the position but will involve Western analysis (standard blotting and WES/JESS) on human muscle tissue and cultured cells, RNA extraction of muscle tissue and cultured cells, microscopy and immunohistochemical analysis of cell culture experiments and human adipose tissue. An ideal candidate will bring a strong working knowledge and ability to independently troubleshoot Western analysis, immunohistochemistry, microscopy, as well as experience with cell culture to help advance projects in the lab. This position will also involve testing insulin sensitivity in muscle cell cultures using an insulin-stimulated glycogen synthesis assay using radioactive glucose.

Laboratory duties include growing and maintaining cell cultures, both cell lines and primary cells, Western blotting, RNA extraction, and microscopy in the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes.

  • SDS-PAGE Western blotting (traditional and WES/JESS). Independently running and troubleshooting Westerns.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

Intermediate Level:
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, or related field.
  • One (1) year of professional level research experience.

Senior Level:
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, or related field.
  • Two (2) years of professional level research experience.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience independently running and troubleshooting Westerns highly preferred.
  • Experience independently working with cell cultures highly preferred.
  • WES/JESS analysis experience highly preferred.
  • Master's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, or related field.
  • Experience working with microscopy and immunohistochemistry.
  • Experience running PCR and ELISA.
  • 2-6 years of professional level experience working in a laboratory (laboratories required for classes do not count).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • The successful applicant will be extraordinarily organized, social, good with computers, very motivated, and able to work independently to accomplish research goals.
  • Lab skills include cell culture sterile techniques, Western blotting, microscopy, ELISA, PCR, and basic lab techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Outstanding customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary for this position has been established as:

Intermediate Level: $43,834 - $55,757

Senior Level: $47,388 - $60,278

The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation depending on the level.
