Position Description:
Excelling in quality, innovation and impact, UCLA Extension (UNEX) is one of the top providers of continuing and professional education in the United States, offering programs and classes to more than 50,000 students per year through approximately 4,500 classes and certificate programs to meet the professional development, continuing education and personal enrichment needs of the full spectrum of traditional, nontraditional, domestic, international, professional, and continuing throughout and beyond Los Angeles.

Under the guidance and supervision of the Assistant Dean for Student Services, the inaugural Director of Academic Advising and Student Success will apply a deep understanding of the diversity of UNEX students and expertise in advising to provide leadership, vision, and strategic direction in the creation and establishment of the Center for Academic Advising and Student Success. The Center's ethos and a foundation will be built upon developing collaborative partnerships with students, sharing responsibility, where the advising team and student are equally invested in the educational process and holistic development of the student. The Director supervises, guides, and mentors the academic advising team to support UNEX students in fulfilling their academic goals and pursuing their personal purpose and professional aims. The Director leads the advising team with a focus on delivering equitable, exceptional advising for all new and continuing students UNEX students. The Director possesses a leadership style that is student-centered and characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and altruism.

The Director develops advising strategies and new student programs that support students in making well-informed academic decisions, maximize student engagement and retention, and provide concrete and actionable guidance to accomplish their personal, professional, and academic goals at UNEX. The incumbent will lead the design, implementation, and revision of organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies, and operating procedures as related to Academic Advising and academic retention efforts. The Director will ensure the Center and its staff provide personal and group advising on all academic matters including specializations, course selection, and fulfillment of graduation requirements; stay abreast of academic programs offered at UNEX and the possible career pathways to which said certificates will lead to assure that UNEX programs are competitive and meeting the needs of students; assess advising services for quality and for effectiveness in increasing retention, decreasing time to degree, and overall student success; and maintain responsibility and oversight for managing a centralized handling of certificate audits and progress towards certificate completion.

Lastly, the Director will be highly collaborative, working with units across UNEX to develop and improve policy, programs, and initiatives related to the academic experience of a diverse and large student body with a multitude of objectives, goals, and personal circumstances and needs. The incumbent will partner with other departments that deeply impact the student experience, both on main Campus and within UNEX, to develop student success efforts, formulate research-based solutions to develop programs and services, assist in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of student support systems, and collaborate with academic and administrative units to narrow the gap of attrition and improve overall student satisfaction and success. The Director and their staff will participate in welcoming and supporting students at major UNEX events including New Student Orientation, Certificate Graduation ceremonies, and other activities.


Special Instructions:
The target salary range for this position is between the posted minimum and $6,666.67 monthly.

In 15 of the 16 medical specialty areas examined, UCLA Medical Center ranked in the top 20.
