The de Graffenried lab at Brown University studies microtubule-associated proteins in Trypanosomatid parasites. Trypanosomatid cells are shaped by an array of subpellicular microtubules that underlie the plasma membrane. This array contains subdomains defined by different microtubule-associated proteins, which may function to tune the local properties of the microtubules, allowing them to turn the force generated by the flagellar beat into productive cell motility. The lab employs a wide range of techniques, including light and electron microscopy, biophysics, and biochemistry.
