The Master Patrol Officer - a member of Georgetown Law Campus Police Department - is an integral part of University safety, serving as a liaison to both internal constituencies (students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, visitors, neighbors) and external policing agencies. Reporting directly to the Patrol Sergeant for fulfilling duties assigned, and performing patrol functions and specialized assignments according to all special and general orders in the protection of life and property of Georgetown University, the Master Patrol Officer has duties that include but are not limited to:
  • Provide services to protect the life, well-being, and property of students, faculty, staff, visitors, dignitaries, and others through policing, patrol, event security, investigation, and emergency response as outlined in general orders, special orders, providing information and assistance as directed by a supervisor, and as proscribed in the Consortium of Universities Law Enforcement Training Academy and other departmental trainings
  • Serve as a Field Training Officer (FTO) to field train and mentor and new recruits
  • Provide shift oversight in the absence of a shift supervisor or when instructed to do so by a Campus Police supervisor


Qualifications
  • 5 or more years of security related/law enforcement/military experience - preference for community policing
  • Must be at least 21 years of age and a U.S. Citizen
  • Must have a Special Police Officer Commission in the District of Columbia or sufficient training and experience (as determined by the Security Officers Management Branch of the DC Metropolitan Police Department) to immediately obtain a commission
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license with no violations in the last 3 years and - if hire - must pass Georgetown University driver's certification
  • Ability to obtain and maintain certification in Arrest Control Tactics, Baton, and QC-based Aerosol Subject Restraint and other assigned training subjects
  • Ability to successfully complete all other departmental trainings, to include: Crisis De-Escalation Train-the- Trainer or equivalent; Field Training & Evaluation Program or equivalent; Basic Instructor Training Program or equivalent; First Line Supervisor Training or equivalent; Instructor and Lesson Plan Development Training Program or equivalent
  • All applicants are subject to a written test, a report writing test, drug test, physical examination by a medical doctor to University specifications, and extensive psychological testing
  • Ability to pass a detailed background investigation
  • Ability to obtain and maintain certification within promotional evaluation period (for internal promotions) or probationary period (for new hires) as a Field Training Officer
  • Proficient in use of computers, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and email and/or the ability to learn these applications - preference for knowledge of telecommunications equipment and/or administrative and clerical skills
  • Ability to demonstrate tact, patience, and a courteous demeanor in interactions with students, staff, faculty, visitors, and community members
  • Excellent grammar, speaking, and writing skills, including report writing


Preferred qualifications
  • Community policy experience
  • Advanced knowledge of both criminal and civil law, and police policies and procedures


Essential Designation

The Master Police Officer is designated as essential under University guidelines, and therefore

is subject to be on call when necessary. Therefore, willingness to work extended, odd, or off hours to achieve the departmental expectations - to include rotating tours of duty (day shifts, evening shifts, overnight shifts) with fluctuating days off - is essential.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

The Master Police Officer typically performs desk and office duties and spends significant time outside and walking. As a responder to incidents, they may experience proximity to danger - including acts of violence, fire, fumes, odors, toxins, and protests - and may be required to climb stairs, run, bend, kneel, and craw; and to lift up to 100 pounds.

Preference for 20/20 vision or corrective lens (including contact lens) to see far and near objects, estimate distance, and distinguish colors.
