Job Summary:

The Colorado Department of Corrections' (CDOC) mission statement is "To protect the citizens of Colorado by holding offenders accountable and engaging them in opportunities to make positive behavioral changes and become law-abiding, productive citizens." CDOC oversees approximately 16,000 incarcerated adults across over 20 prison facilities, and provides medical and behavioral health care to all inmates in their custody.

The INTERIM Chief of Psychiatry at CDOC serves as the department's chief psychiatric authority providing leadership, direction, and supervision of psychiatric services. We are seeking a seasoned, experienced leader with extensive correctional psychiatric experience and a demonstrated commitment to this underserved patient population. The successful candidate will be able to quickly gain credibility as a trusted, experienced clinician and a highly collaborative, fair, and flexible administrator.

While psychiatric providers are considered University of Colorado contract employees within the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC), they are expected to adhere to CDOC policies and procedures. Prior to hire, psychiatry providers must be deemed eligible to practice in the Department of Corrections and must pass background and drug screen. Prior to beginning clinical work, psychiatric providers are expected to attend and complete any and all training required by CDOC. CDOC reserves the right to terminate services with written notice for any reason at any time.

Key Responsibilities:
    Provides clinical leadership, direction, and supervision of all psychiatric care within the state operated prison facilities. Collaborates with community and department stakeholders with regard to clinical or administrative issues. Partners with others to ensure the goals and objectives of the department are met and high-quality care is delivered. Recruit, train, supervise, develop, manage, and evaluate performance of psychiatrists and licensed independent practitioners. Ensures that psychiatrists and physicians are properly credentialed. Monitors and ensures individuals are practicing within their scope. Monitors performance of faculty practicing at CDOC facilities from the Department of Psychiatry, including annual faculty evaluations. Oversees and manages psychiatry clinic scheduling, distributing psychiatrist time to facilities based upon caseload, facility needs, and facility backlogs. Participates in the Peer Review process and addresses psychiatrist issues as needed to ensure high quality clinical care and staff performance. Through collaborative agreements, provides supervision of psychiatric mid-level providers, if required to ensure quality clinical care. Ensures compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., NCCHC or ACA). Develops and revises CDOC policies and procedures and clinical care guidelines/protocols as pertains to psychiatry. Completes reviews of sentinel events and other unexpected outcomes. Participates in multidisciplinary staffing meetings related to high-risk and/or high needs patients as the psychiatry subject matter expert. Serve as psychiatry subject matter expert as needed in matters of litigation. Addresses, investigates, and resolves complaints from CDOC staff, patients, or external customers regarding psychiatry clinical care issues. Takes appropriate action to ensure satisfaction amongst all parties. Provides staff education, instruction, and mentoring. Oversees and provides education for medical students, residents, and forensic psychiatry fellows. Serves and/or chairs various committees to assist CDOC in its mission and goals (including but not limited to Pharmacy and Therapeutics, Quality Management, etc.). Attends other meetings as needed/requested by CDOC to assist CDOC in its mission and goals (including but not limited to Clinical Services Chiefs Meetings, Clinical Services Management Meetings, etc.) Participates in other CDOC projects, workgroups, and initiatives as assigned. Works collaboratively with various departments (e.g., Correctional Staff, Medical Providers, Nursing, Behavioral Health, etc.) to meet common goals. Maintains active clinical privileges in the Department of Psychiatry. Provides clinical consultation and second opinions on difficult cases. Provides authorization for restricted pharmaceuticals/requests outside of the CDOC formulary. Provides evidence-based psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and treatment in a correctional setting and job duties as outlined in Staff Psychiatrist job description. Provides clinical coverage for colleagues and across facilities as needed. Completes any required CDOC trainings. Complies with CDOC administrative regulations and clinical standards. Performs related work as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: MD or DO
  • Graduate of an accredited School of Medicine
  • Completion of an accredited US General Psychiatry Residency
  • Must have an unrestricted license to practice Medicine in the State of Colorado
  • Must have Current DEA Certificate
  • Must have AHA basic life support (BLS) for healthcare provider, or equivalent CPR certification
  • BC/BE in Psychiatry by the ABPN

Preferred Qualifications
    BC/BE in Forensic Psychiatry by the ABPN 5 years post-residency experience in correctional adult 5 years of experience in the supervision of licensed professional staff to include physicians, mid-level providers, and other clinical staff. Progressive management experience coordinating and managing healthcare in a complex environment to include managing accreditation, ensuring compliance, and promoting continuous quality improvement.

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

The salary range is determined based on rank and education for this position and has been established by CDOC and is set at $227,766-$239,154 with the possibility of an administrative stipend.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
