Systems Administrator

Position Summary

Reporting to the Library Systems Manager III, the Systems Administrator will be responsible for Linux server administration, which includes the provision, configuring and deployment of Linux server environments; application administration, which includes configuring, deployment, and maintaining of server-based applications, as well as providing support for and troubleshooting system hardware and software issues; and customer support.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in an information technology area related to the duties to be performed; experience working with open source software applications and services; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications
  • Familiarity working with Linux in a command-line environment
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work well in teams
  • Willingness to continually advance technical skills through self-study
  • Ability to take ownership of a project and see it through to completion
  • Experience creating administration scripts within Linux (using, e.g., Bash or Python)
  • Competence in administering servers in a command-line environment
  • Competence in securely configuring common Linux services such as Apache, MariaDB/MySQL, and OpenSSH
  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure
  • Experience with containerization and container orchestration (with, e.g., Docker)
  • Familiarity with provisioning and automation tools like Terraform, Ansible, and GitLab CI
  • Familiarity with Linux filesystems, storage architecture, backup systems, and best practices
  • An understanding of SQL databases, including database normalization, proper use of SQL data types, indexes, and foreign keys
  • Familiarity with Git or another version control system
  • Competency with IP networking and firewall management
