Job Details
Swarthmore College invites applications for a full-time Lecturer in Music to begin in Fall 2023. The successful candidate will direct two vocal ensembles (Chorus and Garnet Singers) continuously throughout the academic year, teach one academic course (Music 002B: Reading and Making Music: The Basics of Notation), and fulfill additional academic or organizational responsibility for the music program (either an additional course or administrative responsibilities). The Swarthmore Chorus is a mixed-voice ensemble comprising approximately 75 students, faculty, staff, and community members. The Garnet Singers is a select (auditioned), mixed-voice ensemble composed of approximately 24 students. This is an initial one-year renewable appointment. Upon favorable performance review, the position is eligible for continual reappointment periods in 1-to-5-year increments.
Swarthmore's music program in the Department of Music and Dance is a vibrant community of performers, creators, and critical thinkers who share a passion for music. The core music faculty currently represent the disciplines of composition, ethnomusicology, historical musicology, music theory, and performance. We have seven faculty-led department ensembles (Chorus, Chinese Music Ensemble, Gamelan, Garnet Singers, Jazz Ensemble, Orchestra, and Wind Ensemble), in addition to robust programs for private lessons and chamber music. We are housed in the newly renovated Lang Music Building, which includes an acoustically stunning concert hall and the Underhill Music and Dance Library. Our students are often active in many other fields across campus and the wealth of interests and curiosity they bring to music fosters a fresh and exciting atmosphere.
