The Precision Brain Health Initiative (PBHI) is the scientific vision under which the Framingham Heart Study Brain Aging Program (FHS-BAP) and multiple other projects based at the Medical Campus at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. This multi-million dollar research program is seeking a Senior Director of Research Operations to support our expanding scientific portfolio and growing research group. This person will be the go to person for the PI in directing multiples projects (>30) that involve different inter-disciplinary sub-teams working on varying timelines and on different deliverables, but in combination will meet the PBHI bold and ambitious research effort. Aside from implementation of widely-accepted and well-used conventional research approaches, this program differentiates from others because of its greater focus on integration of digital technologies and advanced computational analytic strategies, both of which are in the nascent stages of adoption. The complexity of the multi-dimensional digital data streams requires implementation of different data accessibility options (some of which are still in the developmental stages) and creation and validation of new data processing tools. Extensive collaboration with multiple sectors including start-up tech companies, mature business enterprises, along with non-profit, other academic institutions add multi-factorial intricacies that require a seasoned professional with experience to craft and meet the value propositions relevant to each stakeholder.

The Senior Director of Research Operations will work with the leadership team of the FHS-BAP and PBHI as well as their staff and collaborators, whose experience and expertise span multiple schools, departments and disciplines across the universitys two campuses. The Operations Director will help scientific teams facilitate both the planning and execution of large multi-disciplinary projects. This unique leader will have a proven track record of operations management experience in both start-up and mid-size to large companies. This person will be responsible for communicating and coordinating most aspects of the scientific execution, compliance, and alliance management. For example, the Director will help monitor and coordinate scientific progress, budgets and resource allocations both within and across the FHS-BAP and PBHI teams, identify operational inefficiencies and build capacity and capabilities that fix these issues, and train faculty and program manager staff to build their own management and leadership skills, while carefully managing complex relationships with a subset of funding and research partners. A key outcome will be increasing the teams overall work capacity evidenced by the on-boarding of new projects, whose execution will include current faculty and staff in addition to new team members. The Senior Director will also be expected to be involved in the hiring of staff and contribute positively to a high-functioning team capable of anticipating and solving problems, removing obstacles, and maximizing the scientific impact across work groups.

The Difference Is Our DNA

What compelled the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to award Boston University a grant to fight newborn mortality in Zambia? Why did Martin Luther King, Jr. adopt BU as a place where he could hone his message of justice and equality? And what is the catalyst that prompts 32,557 students from 135 countries to call BU their home every semester? It’s in our DNA: an inherent desire in each of our students, faculty, and staff to vigorously and dauntlessly pursue knowledge—and embrace the unlimited possibilities that come with it.

A Community Unlike Any Other

As you can see below, it takes people, ideas, and a little luck (Boston, you’re our town) to make BU what it is today: one of the most dynamic universities in the world.

Celebrated thinkers: On any given day, students will find themselves mesmerized by Nobel Prize winners, a poet laureate, and the first biomedical engineer ever to receive a MacArthur Foundation “Genius Award,” among others.

Extraordinary teaching: When a classroom starts to percolate with new ideas, it’s because our faculty of scholars and accomplished practitioners know how to ignite students’ imaginations. That’s why we reward our best teachers with BU’s most prestigious honor: The Metcalf Cup and Prize.

Groundbreaking research: With faculty dedicated to a creative, interdisciplinary approach to problem solving, BU has become a leading global research institution—propelled forward by over $350 million a year in sponsored program revenue.

World-class students: Elite students from all 50 states and 135 countries pursue higher education on BU campuses in Boston and at programs in L.A., D.C., and more than 30 other cities on six continents.

A city within a city: Today, 80% of our undergrads live on campus, which could explain the 525 student activity groups alone.

The greatest college town in the world: Boston. ’Nuff said.
