Your opportunity:

The Communications Officer plans and strategizes to support the strategic goals of New College. The incumbent will be responsible for the design and development of communications materials, as well as marketing and outreach efforts. Specifically, they will have oversight of the college website, the visual identity of the college and all it’s visual assets. The incumbent will also develop and coordinate the execution of targeted communications plans, develop and distribute promotional material in both web and print formats for awareness campaigns, information sessions, special events and general activities throughout all stages of the student life cycle. This role will also support advancement activities (exp: correspondence, events and speaking notes).

The Communications Officer will engage members of the College to tell their stories and share their authentic experiences. They will demonstrates a passion for interviewing, writing and storytelling that informs audiences and advances the profile of the College.

This role is currently eligible for a hybrid work arrangement, pursuant to University policies and guidelines, including but not limited to the University of Toronto’s Alternative Work Arrangements Guideline.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Overseeing tasks related to the production and dissemination of communications/marketing materials
  • Implementing plans and process improvements for content generation activities
  • Liaising with the University's central communication office to pitch and share stories
  • Tracking milestones and timelines for stories
  • Researching and recommending story ideas that advance priorities and initiatives
  • Conducting interviews with leaders, faculty, staff and students for external publication
  • Writing news and feature stories
  • Implementing a digital media plan that supports marketing/communications strategy

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in communications, marketing, or journalism, or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum four years of recent and related experience developing and implementing communications strategies.
  • Experience writing articles (feature and news), reports, letters, and speeches.
  • Experience creating and developing print and digital promotional materials.
  • Experience creating and maintaining digital media plans, including social media campaigns.
  • Demonstrated experience with copy writing and copy editing.
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of creating and maintaining digital and social media plans, multimedia strategies, tools, channels, trends, campaigns, and capabilities.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), Adobe Creative Suites, WordPress, Drupal and other similar content management systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Proven journalistic skills, including investigating and pitching stories, conducting interviews, and writing news and feature stories.
  • Sound judgement and excellent decision-making skills.
