About the Department

The Henry R. Winkler Center for the History of the Health Professions is an archive and exhibit facility chronicling the history of the health sciences primarily in the Cincinnati area. The Winkler Center's over 35,000 volumes of rare and classic works on health history however broaden that scope to include Europe and date back almost 500 years. In addition to its archival collections, books, and medical objects, the Winkler Center also presents public and educational programming, and workshops throughout the year.

Job Overview

The Henry R. Winkler Center for the History of the Health Professions at the University of Cincinnati Health Sciences Library seeks current students or recent graduates in public history, library science or a related field to apply for a full-time (two-year with the possibility of extension) Archival Fellowship.

Fellows will be introduced to the full range of daily operational, academic, and curatorial duties associated with the Winkler Center. Successful candidate will report to the Winkler Center Archivist & Curator.

Full-time two-year position with possibility of extension.

Essential Functions
  • Under the direction and supervision of the Winkler Center Archivist/Curator, arrange and describe physical or born-digital archival collections. May include rehousing physical materials, prioritizing items for digitization, planning for supply needs, creating EAD finding aids in ArchivesSpace, cleaning and performing minor preservation tasks.
  • Provide reference services to Winkler Center’s researchers and patrons (online and in-person). Includes providing reference interviews, retrieving materials for use in reading room, and scanning materials to transmit digitally.
  • Produce and/or assist in the production of exhibits. Duties include but are not limited to writing scripts, choosing images, designing, and liaising with university and outside contractors.
  • Assist Winkler Center Archivist/Curator in providing tours and educational workshops.
  • Select and prepare bound volumes, single sheets, and objects
  • for treatment at the Preservation Lab. This will include time working with staff at the University of Cincinnati Libraries’ Preservation Lab, learning skills such as housing, stabilization, and storage best practices.
  • Provide support for the cataloging and classification of rare
  • monographs and three-dimensional objects.
  • Under the supervision of the Winkler Center Archivist/Curator, investigate value of potential archival, book, and/or object donations. May include meeting with donors, advising donors on the process of donation, or creating deeds of gift.
  • Assist with Winkler Center educational and outreach events.
Required Education

Current student or recent graduate with a Master of Library Science (archives concentration) from an ALA-accredited institution, or a graduate degree in a related academic discipline with training in archives.

Required Experience
  • Experience processing records consistent with current archival best practices (may be classroom experience)
  • Familiarity with DACS and EAD finding aids
Additional Qualifications Considered
  • Experience creating of DACS-compliant EAD finding aid
  • Experience in an archival repository
  • Demonstrated ability to work productively on one’s own or with others in a team environment
  • Experience developing and maintaining social media content
  • Comfortable with public speaking
