The investment analyst will serve as an integral member of the team responsible for the management of the Colby College endowment. This position reports to the chief investment officer, while also supporting and having regular deliverables to other members of the team. The successful candidate will play a key role in monitoring and assessing existing portfolio investments through manager meetings, performance and risk analysis, and industry diligence. The investment analyst will also maintain data in the office’s performance reporting system, create and generate reports, and perform analysis on individual investment managers, asset classes, and the portfolio as a whole. This position will serve as a generalist, gaining broad exposure across investments and investment operations and will also act as a representative of the College throughout the investment community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative analysis on existing and new potential investments as well as the portfolio as a whole
  • Monitor and analyze portfolio through performance analysis including return attribution, exposure analysis, value creation attribution, and measurement of risks
  • Actively participate in investment manager meetings with responsibility for notes, memos and other follow-up analysis
  • Conduct independent research projects on a variety of topics related to the current endowment and emerging investment opportunities
  • Maintain data in the performance reporting system
  • Assist with investment operations tasks
  • Update manager benchmarks
  • Assist team with investment due diligence and investment analysis
  • Research new markets using both quantitative tools and qualitative analysis
  • Represent the College effectively while interacting with investment managers and other endowments and institutional investors
  • Interact with existing and prospective investment managers including some travel domestically
  • Regularly update various reports for distribution within the Investment Office as well as periodic Investment Committee and Trustee meetings
  • Prepare informational materials for the Investment Committee and Board of Trustees
  • Mentor interns and help coordinate recruiting initiatives
  • Attend relevant industry conferences as appropriate
  • Perform additional duties as assigned; duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in education and experience; relevant coursework preferred
  • Colby graduating senior who has demonstrated strong academic achievement with an interest in learning about the investment management industry (all majors welcome)
  • Ability to conduct independent research
  • Some knowledge of basic investment concepts
  • Demonstrate analytical and problem solving skills and attention to detail
  • Proactive and intellectually curious; a proven self-starter
  • Ability to work well in a small team environment; share responsibility, manage multiple assignments simultaneously, and adjust priorities to meet challenges as they arise
  • Exhibit a high degree of integrity
  • Demonstrate a desire to learn about the investment industry and grow as a professional, both through internal mentorship as well as proactively seeking external learning opportunities
  • Professional, organized, and highly detail-oriented
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Enthusiastic about being part of the College and contributing to its mission

  • Basic competency with Excel

KEY RELATIONSHIPS:

This position has significant interaction with the members of the Investment Office, external investment managers, members of peer institutions, and other outside constituencies.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Position involves sitting, although frequent movement is necessary. Computer usage involving repetitive hand/wrist motion is also necessary. Some travel may be required.
