Job Description Summary / TWC Summary:

Under the supervision of the Assistant Vice President of Student Experience, the Dean of Student Responsibility and Academic Standards will serve as the strategic and operational champion to enhance student success by developing and Implementing student success strategies to advance learning, engagement, retention, and completion, The Dean will provide leadership throughout the university for continued enrollment and registration personnel for student development.Primarily responsible for fostering formation, character development, and personal growth among the students at Texas Southern University, the Dean maintains the Implementation of the Student Handbook, Code of Conduct, and campus organization’s bylaws and constitution for adherence to state, federal, and Institutional standards.The Dean coordinates formation events and series, meets with students regularly for mentorship, offers students correction and accountability necessary for personal growth, and Joins In the events and activities that make up the life of the student experience.

Essential Duties Summary:

  • In collaboration with staff, provide leadership, and co-curricular activities for academic student success Initiatives. Develop, implement, promote, and maintain programs to increase continuing student retention and completion. Coordinate to assist in new student onboarding and developing plans to remove barriers for supports at-risk by connecting them with campus and community services,
  • Develops and implement a formation program on campus to promote students’ virtue and personal growth.
  • Works with student leaders to address pressing issues on campus, particularly with male students.
  • Regularly attends activities and events on campus.
  • Schedules and directs student forums or residence hall meetings when necessary.
  • Acts as chaperone as needed at major events and activities.
  • Consults with Chaplains on appropriate matters.
  • Periodically Identifies and coordinates speakers to come to campus to address the student body on topics relating to personal formation,
  • Responsible for the enforcement of the Student Code of Conduct.
  • Mainly responsible for discipline and adjudication for conduct violations on campus.
  • Works In collaboration with DPS, and Residence Life and Housing on student development and conduct matters.
  • Maintains appropriate records and correspondence relating to the Dean’s office.
  • Leads educational forums and events on formation opportunities and conduct policies.
  • Maintains working relationships with local authorities and the community regarding student behavior off campus.
  • Responds to student emergency situations as they may occur.
  • Provides fiscal management of the Dean of Students budget.
  • Ensures compliance with relevant policies, procedures, professional standards, laws, and national trends as applicable.
  • Develops learning outcomes, conducts assessments, Annual Work Plan goals, and prepares and carries out Institutional Effectiveness plans and reports for programs and initiatives as the Dean of Students.

QUALIFICATIONSANDSKILLSNECESSARY:
  • Comfortable presenting to groups.
  • Knowledge of mental health conditions and ability to engage in emergency situations.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes evening, weekend, and “on-call” assignments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and external constituents.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to motivate students.
  • Experience working with young people, especially in the areas of formation and discipline.
  • Commitment to the character and personal formation of young people into a person’s Individual life choices.
  • Must understand the stated mission of Texas Southern University and understand how the promotion of and sustaining the community at the university Is an essential component of this mission.
  • Maintain, analyze, and interpret data to Identify opportunities and develop strategies to advance academic achievement and student success.
  • Use data to assess the effectiveness of academic and support Initiatives and develop department and personnel goals that align with the strategic goals.
  • Serve on committees and collaborate with educational Institutions and professional organizations for the development and to share best practices.
  • Participate In recruiting, enrollment, and retention events.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and customer service in accordance with the university’s values, positive working relationships, quality customer service, and the ability to make decisions and solve problems.
  • Maintain confidentiality, positive communication, accurate records, and an organized, safe working environment.
  • Exhibit flexibility, willingness to learn, ability to adapt to change, and maintain current technology skills.

Hiring Range:

$73,417.00 - $91,771.00

Education:

Minimum Master’s degree, in Education, Leadership, Student Support, or Counseling.
The degree must be from an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

Terminal Degree preferred.

Required Licensing/Certification:

Valid Texas Driver’s license.

  • Requires full/complete knowledge in multiple disciplines and serves as an ultimate subject matter expert In at least one discipline or function.
  • Demonstrates full command of technical and functional principles, procedures, and subject matter in multiple disciplines to handle any situation and lead or train others using technology solutions, Including Maxent, Presence.
  • Requires the ability to lead the development or modification of work procedures across multiple disciplines.
  • Requires knowledge, expertise, training, and skills pertaining to the understanding, application, and processing of throughout the campus.

Work Experience:

Ten (10) years of higher education work experience. Five (5) years of supervisory experience, and evidence of continual professional development in the field of concentration.

  • Stoop, bend or lift.
