Position Description:

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) at Texas State University, a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), invites applications for a tenure-track position in elementary education with specialization in multilingualism and ESL education. The position will be housed in the EC-6 ESL undergraduate and graduate teacher education programs. The position will be filled at the rank of Assistant Professor.

Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate elementary education courses focused on multilingualism, including acquisition and instruction of language[s], developing and publishing research in a sustained line of inquiry—especially research regarding multilingualism, linguistic marginalization, the politics of language and colonization, or other matters of language and power in educational settings. Other responsibilities include conducting research at the intersection of elementary education, ESL, bilingual/multilingual education; contributing to department and college efforts in program planning, implementation, and evaluation as well as collaboration initiatives with P-12 partners in education; engaging in innovative program development efforts in line with accreditation/state mandates and professional standards; supporting student recruitment efforts; serving on masters and doctoral committees; and providing service to the department, college, university, and the professional community.Texas State University holds a Carnegie Classification of Doctoral University–Higher Research Activity and is engaged in a strategic plan to attain eligibility for the State of Texas’ National Research University Fund. Texas State University is an HSI of over 38,000 students located along the ancient and sacred San Marcos River in San Marcos, Texas. The university also has a campus in Round Rock, Texas, just north of Austin.

Through school and community partnerships, the Department seeks to advance research-based inquiry, theoretical frameworks and instructional approaches that influence practice and policy. We seek a dynamic, innovative scholar who merits appointment as Assistant Professor. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and rank. The successful candidate will be headquartered at the university’s main campus in San Marcos and will teach courses, as needed, at both the San Marcos and Round Rock campuses, as well as on area school district campuses with whom we partner for field-based learning.

Position will begin in Fall of 2023. All positions are subject to availability of funds.

Required Qualifications:

Required Qualifications for Assistant Professor Rank:

  • Earned doctorate by hire date in multilingual education, elementary education, or a closely related field from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • Record of, or demonstrated potential for, excellence in scholarly activity in the field of multilingual education or elementary education with an emphasis on ESL and/or bilingual/multilingual education as evidenced by publications, presentations, grants, etc.
  • Record of experience in working in multilingual settings, in working with linguistically marginalized populations, and/or record of, or demonstrated potential for, excellence in scholarly activity regarding the multifaceted role that languages play in schooling.
  • Record of at least two years of teaching experience in elementary educational settings [EC-6th grade].

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications for Assistant Professor Rank:

  • Knowledge of research on culturally sustaining language education practices.
  • Demonstration of the potential for service at the department, college, and/or university level.
  • Teaching experience, or demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching methods courses in university settings.
  • Experience with education in international contexts.
  • Evidence of, or demonstrated potential for, teacher/student/community collaboration in teaching, research or public pedagogy endeavors.
