Position Summary

The primary responsibility of this position is to provide Electro-Mechanical lab equipment maintenance and repair for the School of Exercise and Nutrition, and the Doctorate of Physical Therapy program. The Equipment Technician II, Electro-Mechanical will provide maintenance, repairs and user support to faculty and staff within the school.

The Equipment Technician II, Electro-Mechanical will provide standard, routine maintenance and repairs to a wide variety of equipment. Expectations will be for the incumbent to clean, adjust, lubricate, replace worn or defective parts, overhaul, assemble, and install electrical and electro-mechanical devices. The position requires the ability to solder and desolder electronic components. The technician will troubleshoot and repair equipment following manufacturer's instructions, guides, and schematics, and/ or standard techniques for electro-mechanical equipment. The Equipment Technician II, Electro-Mechanical will utilize meters and testing devices to test circuits and locate malfunctions. The Equipment Technician II, Electro-Mechanical will repair and maintain equipment such as treadmills, metabolic measurement systems, lactate analyzers, biochemical analyzers, and associated computer equipment in conjunction/collaboration with the school and/or college information technology consultants. The Equipment Technician II, Electro-Mechanical will also act as liaison between the school and off-site equipment vendors and repair technicians.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary

The School of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences is one of the largest academic departments/schools at San Diego State University with over 2,000 students. It offers three undergraduate majors, three master's degrees, and one doctoral degree in the areas of fitness, athletic training, nutrition, exercise physiology, rehabilitation sciences, and physical therapy. There are currently 11 teaching and research labs in the school and the complexity of research labs will increase with the addition of the new faculty to the school.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to two years of journey-level or skilled experience in the maintenance, repair, and operation of scientific or technical equipment in the specialty area to which assigned such as mechanical, electromechanical, electronics or in the specialized category including construction and fabrication and some precision work or requiring trade or craft skills working with a variety of unique materials.

Equivalent to two years of semi-skilled experience maintaining and repairing scientific or technical equipment or related experience in the type of equipment to which assigned as part of instructional support activities may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

Equivalent to two years of trade school or technical arts training with specialization in the type of equipment repair to which assigned, completion of an apprenticeship program, or completion of a full military specialization in the required type of equipment maintenance and repair for one year of the required experience.

Key Qualifications
  • Journey-level or skilled work experience as an electro-mechanical or electronic technician.
  • Experience working in an academic institution, research laboratory, medical facility, or other complex manufacturing, industrial or commercial organizations.
  • Experience providing IT support as related to electro-mechanical lab and research equipment.
  • Experience providing customer service/user support.
  • Experience with maintenance and repair of equipment used in exercise science, nutrition science and/or physical therapy is preferred.

Licenses/Certifications Required
  • Valid California Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within 10 days of hire.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain the CSU Defensive Driver Certification.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $4,500 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,010 - $7,254 per month.
