The Chemistry Department is dedicated to excellence in education, research, and community engagement. Home to 22 full-time faculty members, six part-time faculty members, eight full-time staff members, over 200 undergraduate majors, and over 40 graduate students, the department offers B.A., B.S. (ACS certified) and M.S. degrees in chemistry, and it administers the interdisciplinary Nanoscale Science Ph.D. program. The Department is dedicated to fostering the success and professional development of students of all backgrounds; engaging undergraduate and graduate students in collaborative, innovative scientific research; and supporting the local, regional, national, and international communities through leadership and outreach.

Description of Work:

Responsible for the daily operation of the department and the department programs. The Department Chair/ Director will promote excellence in department programs within the University. Chair/ Director responsibilities are classified as professional duties requiring leadership and mentoring of faculty, administrative expertise to include vision, long term and short-term planning, decision-making and coordination of instruction.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte incites internal applications for the Chair of the Department of Chemistry, effective July 1, 2023. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and rank. Candidate requirements include: 1) a doctoral degree in chemistry or a related discipline; 2) tenured faculty status at UNC Charlotte with a distinguished record of teaching, scholarship and service; 3) demonstrated ability to provide academic leadership in a diverse department within a dynamic urban, public university; 4) experience in administration and leadership; 5) a demonstrated commitment to eliminating barriers and providing various levels of support and assistance, depending on specific needs or abilities, to all faculty, student, and staff so that they may reach their full potential.

Minimum Experience/Education:

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience:

The selected candidate will have the ability to oversee the continued advancement, success, and reputation of the Department. They will demonstrate the ability to: 1) creatively and strategically manage the Department’s budget; 2) encourage and mentor faculty in securing external grants and in achieving excellence in research, teaching and service; 3) lead and support a staff whose duties range from academic administration to lab support; 4) sustain the growth, health and success of degree programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels; 5) support interdisciplinary programs and centers; and 6) support the Strategic Plan, including Goal B2, to advance the research mission by recruiting, nurturing and retaining world-class, diverse faculty, staff and students.
