Job Description

Five Colleges, Incorporated has an opening for a Technical Director in Five College Dance (FCD). The Technical Director works with autonomy under the Production Manager and collaborates with both the Production Manager and Assistant Production Manager to maintain smoothly run environments with industry-standard safe working procedures during all phases of Five College Dance productions. This role has duties shared among the departments of dance at the Five College member institutions.

This is an exempt, benefited position with Five Colleges, Incorporated that requires full-time work August through June. It is an in-person onsite role; the primary work location is on the campus of Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts.

Five College Dance (FCD), a nationally recognized program of the Five College Consortium, is a creative and intellectual collaboration organized between the dance departments and programs at Amherst, Hampshire, Smith, and Mount Holyoke Colleges and the University of Massachusetts Amherst, since 1978. FCD advances embodied practice as a critical mode of inquiry, expression, and civic engagement across cultural and historical contexts. It cultivates new generations of artists, scholars, and practitioners to shape the field of dance and dance studies.

Duties

The Technical Director’s responsibilities include creating and engineering audio and video files and live music set up, supervising lighting focus with the lighting designer, and obtaining and some building of scenic, prop, or rigging items, as well as load in and set up for concerts. The Technical Director attends, supervises, and manages all assigned technical and dress rehearsals, and mentors and trains the concert crew throughout all phases of the production. They supervise pre-show audio/video and lighting checks, troubleshoot and correct technical issues, and run post-production strike with the crew, dancers, and student choreographers. They manage equipment and supplies and ensure theaters are restored to order after productions conclude.

You could be a great fit for this position if you:

  • Have a BA and/or BFA in theater or dance, or equivalent professional experience

  • Are familiar with a wide range of theatrical production related software and control equipment.

  • Find satisfaction in supporting the arts and artists and have a record demonstrating your support

  • Enjoy building relationships with people of diverse backgrounds and perspectives

  • Are an excellent organizer and communicator, both oral and written

  • Have concern for safe practices for performing arts environments

  • Don’t mind working on the evenings and weekends
