Position Summary

This positions primary role will be to support the greenhouse, laboratory, and field activities. Greenhouse activities/responsibilities will include: assisting the Greenhouse Manager with greenhouse experiments for the winter wheat breeding programs and graduate student studies, assisting with daily operations in the greenhouse (watering, fertilizing, transplanting, scouting, etc), and maintaining greenhouse and growth chamber facilities. Laboratory activities will include assisting the Lab Manager in DNA extraction, culturing inoculum for wheat disease studies, seed inventory, etc. Field activities will include assisting with planting and harvest in research plots, when needed. Work may involve operation of research tractors, planters and combines. Assisting in oversight of hourly student employees will be required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with daily greenhouse activities (planting, watering, fertilizing, scouting, and harvest), maintenance of greenhouse and growth chamber facilities, tissue sampling, disease inoculations, etc.
  • Assist with greenhouse-based activities including: implementing wheat disease studies and assist with daily activities when needed
  • Assist with lab-based activities including: DNA extraction, culturing inoculum for field and greenhouse wheat disease studies, and seed inventory
  • Assist with field research including: collecting field data, tissue sampling, harvest, and planting
  • Supervise undergraduate student employees
  • Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

    Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in the specific field of research employment or other related field; up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic research techniques in the specific or related field; word processing, spreadsheet; database and/or desktop publishing software; presentation software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The job may require the appropriate pesticide applicator's registration/certification and/or experience working with potentially dangerous research animals.

    Desired Qualifications

    B.S. degree in Crop and Soil Sciences, Horticulture or related field

    M.S. degree in Crop and Soil Sciences, Horticulture or related field

    • Experience working with plant pathogens, research methodologies, and greenhouse management

    • Experience in field, greenhouse and laboratory research techniques/activities

    • Experience in operating field research implements with GIS-enabled applications

    • Experience operating field research equipment (threshers, combines, planters, etc)

    This is a limited term position funded for one year from date of hire with possible extension contingent upon funding renewal.

    Summary of Physical Demands

    Lifting up to 25lb of the following from floor/waist height in the midst of the following activities (15-30 Minutes)

  • Moving GH pots from bench to another bench
  • Picking up fertilizer/potting soil bags
  • Moving boxes of seed from table to cart
  • Carrying up to 50lb of the following a distance of 20 feet in the midst of the following activities (30 Minute Average )

  • Moving GH pots from one greenhouse to another.
  • Moving GH pots from GH to vern room (via truck)
  • Carrying buckets of seed
  • Pushing/Pulling a load of 10-20 lbs in a cart a maximum distance of 1000 feet in the midst of the following activities

  • Moving seed/supplies via cart from lab to greenhouse
    Moving bags of potting soil from potting area to GH
    Moving GH pots to other GH
