temporary Applications are invited for the temporary role of Surveillance Scientist in the National Virus Reference Laboratory (NVRL). Following interviews, a panel will be formed from which future opportunities may be offered. This is a temporary post.

The National Virus Reference Laboratory (NVRL) plays an important role in the Irish Health Services as the principal diagnostic and reference service for clinicians investigating virus infections. The NVRL currently offers a repertoire of over 130 tests for the diagnosis of at least 45 different pathogens and performs in excess of 900,000 tests annually. The NVRL also operates a stand-alone SARS-CoV-2 testing laboratory at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM), Backweston Laboratory Complex, Youngs Cross, Ballymadeer, Celbridge, Co. Kildare.

Notification of infectious diseases is a statutory requirement in Ireland (Infectious Diseases (Amendment) (No. 3) Regulations 2003 (SI No. 707 of 2003). The primary function of the Surveillance Scientist role is to notify all infectious diseases diagnosed by the NVRL to Departments of Public Health and the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) through Computerised Infectious Disease Reporting (CIDR). Notification of infectious diseases is a statutory requirement in Ireland (Infectious Diseases (Amendment) (No. 3) Regulations 2003 (SI No. 707 of 2003). They are responsible for collaborative activities between the NVRL and HPSC (HSE Health Protection Surveillance Centre) in relation to infectious disease notifications.
