About the Position:

This role is an on-campus, in-person position.

The assistant director will oversee the day to day tutoring operations, such as supervision and evaluation.  This includes assistance in hiring, scheduling and training staff (80+).  This position will also work with the A-LEC director to enhance the tutor training program and facilitate training.   This person will also spend some time tutoring in his/her academic field.  Conduct review sessions and workshops, under faculty guidance, in areas of expertise.  

The assistant director will work with the Director of the Writing Center to train and retain tutors while promoting our services to/at faculty, academic departments, admissions events, orientation activities.  Identify any course concerns to A-LEC director and/or faculty if necessary.

Essential Functions:

    Assist the director in hiring and scheduling tutors each semester.  Review performance of current tutors and provide feedback.  Review reports generated from coordinator to establish scheduling changes to provide service for courses in highest demand.  Focus on STEM course support

    Take the lead in working to enhance the tutor training program.  Design both A-LEC/SMU specific training as well as best practices promoted by ITTPC/CRLA.  Seek regular feedback from tutors on development areas identified.

    Tutor students within the area of expertise; both one on one and group sessions.  Coordinate information with faculty of those courses in order to provide the most helpful services.  Work with SASP and SAES partners to assist smaller scholar groups in areas of expertise such as Rotunda, Honors or First Gen Initiative

    Oversee bi-weekly payroll for student workers.  

    Other duties as assigned by the A-LEC director and Executive director of SASP such as representing SASP at admission and other university events.

    Position requires evening and weekend work. The tutoring center is open Sundays until 10pm; Sundays would be alternated with the tutor coordinator.



Qualifications
Education and Experience:

Master's degree is required. Hard science degree such as math, computer science or engineering preferred.

A minimum of three years of work experience is required. Experience tutoring and/or teaching in higher education is also required. Work as a graduate or teaching assistant will count towards experience.

Experience in training new employee is preferred. Experience working within a team desired.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate strong verbal and interpersonal communications with the ability to quickly build rapport with students, colleagues and with other offices at the university. Must also possess the ability to develop and maintain effective professional working relationships with a wide range of constituencies. The ability to communicate effectively in writing is essential.

Candidate must demonstrate strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify, analyze problems and devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.

Candidate must have a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Experience with People Soft and/or Site Core preferred.
