Job Details

Skidmore College’s Religious Studies Department invites applications for a two-year Visiting Assistant Professor position in Religious Studies to begin in Fall of 2023. We encourage applications from individuals with identities historically underrepresented in the academy and from those who can demonstrate a commitment to justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion in their teaching and scholarship. The position involves an in-person teaching load of 18 credits per year which typically equates to 5 courses per academic year. In Fall 2023 the successful candidate will be scheduled to teach “God/Sex/Love,” an introductory course on religion and sexuality; and “Religion and Society,” an introductory theory and methods course. In Spring 2024 the candidate will be scheduled to teach “American Gods,” an introduction to religious studies with a focus on religious diversity in the United States, as well as other course(s) in their specialization. The successful candidate will have considerable flexibility in their pedagogical approach to all these courses. Beyond the ability to teach the above-listed classes, area of specialization is open. However, the department would particularly welcome candidates who complement our current strengths and/or could contribute to courses in Black Studies, Afro-Caribbean Studies, Indigenous Studies, Latinx Studies, Islam, or Media and Film Studies.

Review of applications will begin 1 April, 2023, and will continue until the position is filled. A complete application includes the following materials:

  1. Cover letter
  2. Curriculum vitæ
  3. A statement on how you enact your commitments to justice (such as antiracism, feminism, decolonial practice) in your teaching, scholarship, and/or service.
  4. A teaching statement outlining how you would approach teaching the courses listed above, and briefly describing courses you would be excited to develop and teach during your time in this position. Please do not invest time into making syllabi for these courses—your teaching statement should give the committee a good sense of your approach to course development and pedagogy, without getting bogged down in week-to-week specifics.
  5. Names and contact information for two references, who may be contacted at a later date.

If you have questions about submitting your application through the portal, please contact Human Resources at: careers@skidmore.edu or (518) 580-5800. Other inquiries about the position should be sent to the search chair Ryan Overbey (roverbey@skidmore.edu) and the search committee’s Diversity Advocate Eliza Kent (ekent@skidmore.edu).

Pay Range:  Commensurate with experience

In order to prevent or significantly reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission at Skidmore College and protect all members of the College community from infection, successful candidates will be required to submit proof of full vaccination as a condition of employment, unless exempted as a reasonable accommodation of a medical condition or sincerely held religious belief or practice.

CREATIVE THOUGHT MATTERS.

Organization

Skidmore is a highly selective liberal arts college with a reputation for its creative approaches to just about everything. With its relatively small size and student-faculty ratio, the College is a close-knit academic community. Skidmore is known for its faculty of teacher-scholars devoted to the instruction and mentoring of undergraduates—approximately 2,400 talented men and women from some 47 states and 46 countries.

A great education is all about putting academic theory and creative expression into practice. That’s what our founder, Lucy Skidmore Scribner, believed. Skidmore’s not an ivory tower. Never has been. Never will be. It’s a place where faculty and students work together, then figure out how to use what they’ve learned to make a difference in the world. This practical focus often leads to cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches, where students carry multiple majors, student-faculty research is common, and internships and community service are standard. It also leads to interesting and unusual combinations of activities, frequently woven into an intellectual passion.

If this kind of experience resonates with you, why not take a closer look at Skidmore?
