GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:

The instructor is responsible for fostering student learning through effectively teaching coursework in the area of Dental Assisting and general health courses within the Allied Health Department. A course load of 15 credit hours per semester is required. The schedule may include both online and face to face delivery formats and may include other virtual and hybrid models as well as teaching at various Kirkwood locations. Must develop, implement and evaluate instruction and report student achievement in assigned courses in accordance with program, department and college policies and procedures. Teaching responsibilities include lecture, laboratory and clinical settings. In addition to teaching responsibilities, the instructor will be expected to contribute professional expertise through non-teaching activities to the program, department, and college. The instructor will be responsible for meeting the goals and objectives of an individual Professional Preparation Plan as outlined by the College's Quality Faculty Plan.

  • DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Be able and willing to deliver courses in variable delivery times, methods, and locations as required by the college.
    • Effectively organize, prepare, and teach assigned courses in accordance with established syllabi to students with varying backgrounds and abilities and adjust teaching techniques accordingly.
    • Evaluate student performance and provide timely feedback on a regular basis.
    • Utilize the Kirkwood Learning Management System to post course syllabi and relevant documents and provide access to student grade book.
    • Maintain a minimum of one office hour per day and be available on an as-needed basis for student questions and discussions regarding their performance.
    • Participate in curriculum development, revision, and assessment activities at course, program, department, and college levels.
    • Discuss program, career, transfer options and other college services with students to support informed academic decisions.
    • Participate in the development and/or execution of departmental and college tasks, projects, and goals.
    • Maintain relationships with K12, transfer, and community and/or industry partners.
    • Regularly engage in professional development activities and actively seek information about developing trends and ideas.
    • Assist in managing all aspects and accreditation of the Dental Assisting program.
    • Adhere to the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) standards and policies.
    • Maintain documentation according to CODA standards and requirements.
    • Manage a classroom setting in a manner that is acceptable and consistent with department and college objectives, guidelines, policies and practices.
    • Assume responsibility; deal effectively with problems, and exercise independent judgment when making decisions.
    • Establish and maintain good working relationships with students, colleagues, staff, administrators, and the general public, serve as a point of contact for industry/community partners.
    • Assist in the process of requesting and maintaining instructional equipment and supplies for classroom/laboratory use.
    • Assist the Program Director with curriculum planning and development of courses.
    • Assist the Program Director with accreditation site visits and annual reports.
    • Participate in program advisory committee meetings.
    • Evaluate and report student performance and progress.
    • Participate in departmental and college wide meetings and activities.
    • Perform other related work duties as assigned.

    PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES WITH/WITHOUT REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION:

    Position involves working in an office setting. Occasional (10-33%) standing, pushing, pulling and grasping. Frequent (34-66%) reaching and viewing a computer and other types of close visual work. Constant (67-100%) sitting, walking, repetitive motion, talking and hearing.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Baccalaureate degree from an academic institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U. S. Department of Education
    • Dental Assisting National Board-Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) credential or eligible to obtain
    • Iowa Dental Board issued Registered Dental Assistant (RDA/QDA) credential or eligible to obtain
    • Expanded Functions Dental Assistant Level 1
    • Minimum of three (3) years of recent and related experience in dental assisting
    • Able to perform duties of a clinical dental assistant
    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Experience teaching at the college level in didactic, laboratory and clinical settings
