Job Summary In support of the Georgia Tech Strategic Plan, which reemphasized and recommitted the Institute to sustainability in service to people and the communities in which they live, the Brook Byers Institute for Sustainable Systems (BBISS) is seeking to hire a leader that will help foster growth at Georgia Tech in community-engaged sustainability research. Overview Serving the Academic and Research Faculty of Georgia Tech focused on sustainability, clean energy, public health, and social impact, this position directly supports the Institute’s research mission as it relates to the just, equitable, and sustainable development of communities, with an emphasis on but not limited to, under-resourced communities in the state of Georgia and the surrounding Southeastern United States. Working with Georgia Tech’s research community and other community engagement specialists (including, but not limited to: Serve-Learn-Sustain; the Office of Institute Relations; Energy Policy Innovation Center; the Strategic Energy Institute; the Institute for People and Technology; the Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience; the Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics, and Computing; and the Partnership for Inclusive Innovation), the Community-Engaged Research Director (CERD) facilitates the development of research programs and projects that intentionally engage and benefit specific communities (people or places) and that are funded by local, state or federal sponsors, foundations, etc. The Director works with investigators at Georgia Tech to understand their research and research aspirations and with communities to understand their assets, needs, and interests. They bring skills in both community engagement and research and help facilitate and steward relationships among researchers and community partners. They build meaningful and equitable partnerships that persist through active and quiescent funding phases. The Director also helps to empower researchers’ discovery and practice of effective models of community-engaged research through consultation and training activities. The Director serves as a resource and point of contact for external communities to connect with the Institute, to access technical, educational, and other resources that may benefit them or help them build capacity, and to advocate for greater attention and support from researchers for studies that directly addresses communities and their interests. Finally, the Director is encouraged to maintain an active community-engaged program of research and/or scholarly activities. The position will be housed in the Brook Byers Institute of Sustainable Systems, serving as a key member of Georgia Tech’s sustainability research leadership team and collaborating closely with related interdisciplinary research institutes (IRIs), centers, and initiatives. Responsibilities Strategic coordination and execution of community partnerships for research Facilitate the building of researcher/community partner teams and their effective collaborations Develop and/or run programs for developing community-engaged research skills for faculty and graduate students Manage and cultivate program funding, sponsor communications, and partner relationships Identify and communicate opportunities for community-engaged research Document and communicate reporting of impact metrics Cultivate a network within the innovation ecosystem including beginning and deepening relationships with diverse faculty researchers and wide-ranging community representatives Facilitate research program engagement across the Institute and externally, including travel to events and presentations Perform other related duties as assigned Required Qualifications“This position vacancy is an open title and open rank announcement. Research Associate/Engineer/Scientist II
- A Master’s degree in sustainability, engineering (any discipline), physical or biological sciences or related fields, and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree, or
- A Master’s degree in sustainability, engineering (any discipline), physical or biological sciences or related fields, and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
- A Doctoral degree (in sustainability, engineering (any discipline), physical or biological sciences or related fields).
Senior Research Associate/Engineer/Scientist
- A Master’s degree in sustainability, engineering (any discipline), physical or biological sciences or related fields, and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree, or
- A Master’s degree in sustainability, engineering (any discipline), physical or biological sciences or related fields, and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
- A Doctoral degree in sustainability, engineering (any discipline), physical or biological sciences or related fields, and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree.
Principal Research Associate/Engineer/Scientist
- A Master’s degree in sustainability, engineering (any discipline), physical or biological sciences or related fields, and eleven (11) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree, or
- A Doctoral degree in sustainability, engineering (any discipline), physical or biological sciences or related fields, and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.
Preferred Qualifications
A demonstrated track record of:
(1) externally funded program development and management;
(2) building and maintaining long-term relationships with communities, especially with lower income, underserved communities and communities of color;
(3) experience working in a higher education environment;
(4) Demonstrated commitment to and contemporary understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
