Job Summary

The university's Chief Compliance Officer manages and oversees programs and activities for establishing standards and implementing procedures to provide to senior management and the Board of Trustees reasonable assurance that the university’s compliance programs are effective and efficient in identifying, preventing, detecting, and correcting noncompliance with applicable laws and regulations. This position works closely with departments across campus and with the Office of General Counsel, Brigham Young University Risk Management and Safety, and the Church Educational System (CES).

Primary Responsibilities

  • Identify relevant laws, regulations, and contractual standards applicable to the university;
  • Stay up-to-date with changing laws and regulations;
  • Educate the university community regarding the requirements of the applicable laws, regulations, and standards;
  • Facilitate the identification of compliance weaknesses and recommend implementation of improvements to processes and controls to help ensure compliance with the applicable laws, regulations, and standards;
  • Develop an annual risk-based compliance work plan to assess the risk of a compliance failure and adjust the plan in light of emerging issues, changes, etc.;
  • Develop compliance assessment tools and conduct assessments of compliance with applicable federal and state laws and regulations;
  • Report to the Executive Risk Management and Compliance Committee and the President's Council the status of compliance programs;
  • Oversee policy management for the university;
  • Partner with campus leadership to facilitate creation, approval, and maintenance of university policies;
  • Take ownership of policy content to assure alignment with current practice;
  • Facilitate the development and timely review of university policies and procedures needed to communicate compliance expectations;
  • Identify operational process improvements and system enhancement opportunities and recommend adjustments to policy to facilitate those changes;
  • Oversee, mentor, and train student employees and interns, providing them a professional work experience.

  • Excellent oral, written communication and presentation skills;
  • A self-starter with a desire to learn;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain collaborative and cooperative working relationships with faculty, administrators, staff, students, and external agencies; and,
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work with all levels of university personnel, provide a wide variety of training events, and lead teams in problem solving activities.

Education

Bachelor’s degree required, preferable in accounting, finance, business management, legal studies or other related field. Master’s or law degree preferred.

Certifications

Certified Compliance and Ethic Profession (CCEP), Certified Risk

and Compliance Management Professional (CRCMP), or other relevant certification is desirable.

Work Experience

Five years' prior experience in a related field, preferably in higher education.

Physical Demands

Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions (such as in typical office or administrative work).
