Assoc/Full Professor & Director of Graduate Studies

Arizona State University invites applications for the position of Director of Graduate Studies in the School of Civic and Economic Thought and Leadership (SCETL), a tenured faculty member in the School who will provide leadership for the graduate program, and serve as part of the senior faculty leadership of the School. DESCRIPTION:  The School of Civic & Economic Thought and Leadership (SCETL), now in its sixth year, is a growing academic and civic enterprise with an undergraduate major and minor, undergraduate PPE certificate, and an M.A. degree in Classical Liberal Education and Leadership.  One of the School’s two centers, The Center for Political Thought and Leadership (CPTL), focuses on civic education, especially American political and constitutional thought, for a broad public and higher education and particularly for K-12 schools. The Director of Graduate Studies will be a tenured faculty member in the School, associate or full professor, providing both strategic and administrative leadership to build the nascent graduate program; be a member of the School’s senior faculty leadership team; and undertake the teaching and research expectations of a Carnegie R1 university.

DUTIES: The Director of Graduate Studies will administer the M.A. in Classical Liberal Education and Leadership in collaboration with an Associate Director of Graduate Studies (faculty member), a graduate studies committee, the SCETL Director and Associate Director, and the academic advisor along with other School staff. Strategic tasks include building enrollment in the degree, both in Arizona and nationally, and both among school teachers and a broader set of potential graduate students seeking a liberal arts foundation for civic leadership; further developing the donor support for the graduate program; and developing the national network of supporters and partners for the M.A. degree. The Director also will be expected to meet the requirements of a regular faculty member at ASU: to have an active, productive, and nationally recognized research agenda in accordance with ASU’s status as an R1 research institution, and to engage in regular teaching (with a reduced course load given administrative duties). Further, the Graduate Studies director will be a member of the senior faculty leadership of the School, supporting the Director and Associate Director to continue developing the School with its distinctive blend of liberal arts and civic education, and its broader civic education outreach missions for ASU and a broader community.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Ph.D. in Political Science, History, Philosophy, or a related field. Possess a record of research activity sufficient for tenure at an R1 research university, with some focus on the Western tradition of liberal arts education, and political thought or intellectual history. Demonstrated administrative experience with an undergraduate or graduate degree program in a social sciences or humanities academic department. Demonstrated effectiveness working with diverse student, faculty, and staff populations and communities.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

• Stronger applicants will have a research and teaching record that addresses American political thought and constitutional democracy, and/or civic education; supported by a strong record of successful publications. Successful demonstrated experience in building and administering academic programs, from strategic visioning to program assessment; Supervising and collaborating with faculty leaders and senior support staff; working successfully with university administration and leaders; Demonstrated experience acquiring external funding for student scholarships and programs; Demonstrated success with connecting an academic program to statewide, regional, and national networks in research and education.The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences within, ASU values our demographic, cultural, and intellectual diversity, and continually strives to foster a welcoming and inclusive environment.
