Job description

The Department of History seeks to appoint a Lecturer in Russian History, tenable for 36 months full-time from 1 September 2023, to cover for Professor Stephen Lovell during a period of externally funded leave.

The post-holder will be responsible for teaching the second-year undergraduate module Russia in the Age of Anna Karenina and the final-year Special Subject The Culture of Politics in Revolutionary Russia. In addition, you will teach on the first-year module Historical Skills, Sources and Approaches, as well as making contributions to the MA in Modern History. You will also be expected to contribute to the administration and pastoral provision of the Department of History.

Applications are welcome from candidates with expertise in Russian history of the tsarist, revolutionary or early Soviet period and the ability to teach the modules outlined above. Candidates should have submitted a PhD by the date of appointment.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver team-taught and specialized teaching at all levels of UG curriculum
• Contribute to MA teaching and supervision
• Contribute to administrative and pastoral provision in the Department of History
• Conduct research on Russian History

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

1. PhD in Russian history submitted

2. Excellent research expertise in Russian history

3. Ability to convene, teach and assess modules relating to Russian history across the undergraduate curriculum

4. Ability to engage students and support their learning

5. Demonstrable administrative and interpersonal skills, a collaborative ethos, and capacity for team-working

6. Strong track record in research relative to career stage

7. Experience of teaching and supporting students at UG level

8. Ability to teach the modules listed in the role profile

Desirable criteria

1. Experience of teaching and supporting students at PG level
