The School of Civic and Economic Thought and Leadership (SCETL) invites applications for a full-time, benefits-eligible Assistant Teaching Professor beginning August 2023. This is a fixed-term, academic year (nine month) appointment with no tenure implications. Subsequent academic year renewals (Aug. 16 to May 15) are contingent upon performance, availability of resources, and the needs of the unit. This faculty member also supports the Graduate Studies program for the School, during the academic year and part of the summer. The new School of Civic & Economic Thought and Leadership aims to develop a new kind of leader, blending tradition and innovation by blending liberal arts education and civic education in its degrees and academic programs, including in its M.A. in Classical Liberal Education and Leadership.
AREAS OF SPECIALIZATION/COMPETENCE: Political Philosophy and Thought, and American Political Thought; to include economic thought and political economy; and administration of an academic degree program, preferably a graduate degree. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and teaching undergraduate courses in civic thought to include a course the history of moral and political thought, a course in American political thought, and a course in the history of economic thought and debates on capitalism. Further, the successful candidate will develop combined graduate (M.A.) and undergraduate seminars in particular areas of moral and political thought, American political thought and leadership, and economic thought. These courses will be taught in-person and online, with the majority taught in-person. ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES: In addition to teaching, administrative responsibilities will focus on supporting the Director of Graduate Studies (a tenured professor) to manage and develop the School’s M.A. degree; to include working with a graduate studies committee, and collaborating with the academic advisor along with other School staff. The Graduate Director is charged with building enrollment in this new M.A. degree, both in Arizona and nationally (courses are offered both in person and as live online seminars), and both among school teachers and a broader set of potential graduate students seeking a liberal arts foundation for civic leadership.
- PhD or DPhil in Political Science, History, or related disciplines with a focus on political thought and/or American political thought Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching, including Socratic, discussion-based teaching Demonstrated evidence of organizational and communication skills Demonstrated effectiveness working with diverse student, faculty, and staff populations and communities
- Experience creating curriculum (both discussion-based and lecture courses), formative and summative assessments, classroom activities, and using an online learning management system Demonstrated success in fostering discussion among diverse viewpoints and fostering student participation in expressing diverse views Demonstrated success meeting the needs of underrepresented student populations or reaching out to diverse communities, intellectual-political and demographic Ability to support SCETL’s new undergraduate Certificate in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) by teaching interdisciplinary courses including literature from all three disciplines. Experience with administering an academic degree program, preferably a graduate program Experience with program building, to include new academic degrees or certificates
