The ideal candidate will share Fresno City College's commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. For the 2021-2022 academic year, we enrolled over 34,000 students in which 60% identify as Latinx, 11% as Asian/Pacific Islander, 5% as Black/African American, 20% as White, 1% as American Indian/Alaska Native, and 3% as multiracial. Fresno City College is a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community. The successful candidate will join a department dedicated to the use of curriculum responsive to the students it serves.
Reporting to the Dean of Counseling at Fresno City College, this counselor/coordinator assignment will be to coordinate student services processes and procedures for the betterment of African American students. The counselor/coordinator will collaborate with the Office of Educational Services & Institutional Effectiveness to develop an institution level response to retention and persistence of African American students. Duties and responsibilities include, but not limited to the following:
- Lead and collaborate in developing programs and student support services designed to improve African American student retention and graduation rates;
- Collaborate and Coordinate with various departments including Associate Student Government and committees throughout the college to increase access, engagement, and celebration of success for African American/Black students;
- Research, develop training and organize comprehensive counseling services to African American/Black students, including academic and career counseling, transfer including Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU); personal and life transitions;
- Develop and maintain professional communications and strategic alliances with the Black Chamber of Commerce, Trade Unions, Fresno County Superintendent of Schools (FCSS), and other local organizations designed to promote Black Excellence;
- Collaborate with Institutional Review Office to accurately track and report data on African American/Black student success and achievement and use the information to adjust student support services;
- Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and administrators in the development of an annual report on the institutions progress toward effectively serving African American Students and other disproportionately impacted groups;
- Utilize technology to track student progress, implement efficient support services, provide counseling services, and make presentations in classrooms and other group settings;
- Develop and coordinate intentional case-management services for identified students and provide follow up services including Early Alert responses and resource referrals;
- Support the organization and implementation of matriculation activities, such as orientation, counseling and follow-up services to students;
- Support the implementation of the Guided Pathways, Student Equity Achievement (SEA), and other student success initiatives;
- Participate in meetings, conferences, trainings, and other professional development activities to maintain the expertise required to provide accurate and reliable information and support to students seeking to complete a certificate, associate degree, or transfer;
- Monitor and implement programs in compliance with federal, state, district, and college regulations, policies, and procedures; ensure alignment with the college's Strategic Plan, Equity Plan, Guided Pathways, and commitment to anti-racism as outlined in the State Chancellor's Vison for Success;
- Serving on and attending department, college, and district committees as needed;
- Participating in program review, student learning outcome development and assessment to improve student learning;
- Participate in the accreditation process;
- Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing;
- Provide counseling services in a variety of settings and times, including evening and/or weekends, on-line or off-campus;
- Otherwise fulfilling all of the duties and responsibilities of instructors as required by Administrative Regulation 7122; and
- Other duties as assigned.
All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom; AND
- Master’s in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling; OR
- A valid California Community College Credential; OR
- The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency).

Conditions of Employment:
- Experience and skill incorporating elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility;
- Recent experience working with African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
- Willingness to examine and remediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
- Related work and professional experience;
- Experience working with students of various cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds, including disabled students;
- Demonstrated ability to work with computers, and other technologies, which are utilized in providing high-quality instruction and support to students;
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and staff;
- Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals;
- Experience and/or demonstrated understanding of the unique social and psychological needs of people of color;
- Experience in designing and preparing Student Educational Plans (SEPs) for community college students;
- Experience teaching courses in career and personal development;
- Experience in developing and presenting counseling related workshops and orientation sessions;
- Experience providing counseling and follow-up services to students on probation or academic dismissal status;
- Knowledge of California Community Colleges matriculation processes;
- Experience and skill with addressing issues of equity;
- Knowledge of student development theories pertaining to community college students;
- Demonstrated ability to connect students with on/off campus resources to assist them in their college life management;
- Demonstrated ability to use a broad range of technology pertaining to data collection and analysis for student success and equity; and
- Demonstrated ability to work closely with faculty in academic divisions and engage in collegial dialogue on issues of student success.
181 duty days per year.
Salary and Benefits:
Starting annual salary is $60,678 – $93,414 based on education and experience. An annual doctoral stipend of $2,270 is available. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are also members of the California State Teacher’s Retirement System (CalSTRS).
