Duties and Responsibilities:

The Department of Biology, College of Arts and Sciences, Loyola University Chicago (LUC) invites applications for a full-time post-doctoral fellow, beginning in Academic Year 2023-2024. The position is for one year with the possibility of renewal for additional years based on performance and funding. The postdoctoral fellow will study the response of oligodendrocytes to various stress conditions, including ER stress and inflammation. This position will support research in the laboratory of Dr. Yanan Chen, which uses cellular, genetic, and pharmacological approaches to understand the cytoprotective pathways in oligodendrocytes against inflammation and investigate the impact of oligodendrocyte protections on the progression of multiple sclerosis. The position is jointly funded by Loyola’s Department of Biology and the National MS Society and provides an ideal opportunity for candidates who are interested in gaining teaching experience while conducting cutting-edge research.

Located on Chicago’s vibrantly multicultural North Side, LUC is committed to creating an inclusive, responsive community of faculty, students, and staff. As an urban-based Department of Biology dedicated to mentoring a diverse student body, many of whom come from under-represented and under-served populations, we especially encourage applications from candidates from under-represented groups. We also encourage applications from candidates committed to interdisciplinarity (i.e., working with colleagues across different subfields and disciplines). This search is part of a university-wide, multiyear hiring initiative designed to hire outstanding researchers and teachers who are reflective of our diverse student body. Of special interest are candidates who can further the University’s efforts to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The postdoc will work with Dr. Chen to investigate the cytoprotective response pathways in oligodendrocytes in vitro, in a variety of genetic mouse models as well as in mouse models of demyelination. The candidate will be involved in several different aspects of the project, including collecting and analyzing data, writing manuscripts, giving presentations, and mentoring students. Experimental techniques will include behavioral assessment of mouse models, brain and spinal cord dissection, immunohistochemistry, immunoblotting, EM processing, confocal, TEM imaging, and other biochemical and molecular approaches. In addition to lab work, the postdoc will teach one or two courses in the Department of Biology.

Working at Loyola University Chicago

Loyola University Chicago, a private university founded in 1870 as St. Ignatius College, is the nation’s largest Jesuit, Catholic University and the only one located in Chicago. Shaped by our city and our Jesuit traditions, Loyola University Chicago offers students an educational environment unmatched for its diversity of thought and experience.

Loyola University Chicago comprises four campuses: Lake Shore (LSC), Water Tower (WTC), Health Sciences (HSC), and the John Felice Rome Center in Italy, and is home to eleven schools and colleges: Arrupe College, Quinlan School of Business, Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing, Stritch School of Medicine, College of Arts and Sciences, School of Communication, School of Continuing and Professional Studies, School of Education, School of Law, School of Social Work, and Graduate School. Loyola also features course locations in Beijing, China; Saigon-Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; Vernon Hills, Illinois (Cuneo Mansion and Gardens); and a Retreat and Ecology Campus in Woodstock, Illinois.

With three campuses spread throughout the greater Chicago area, students have access to hundreds of cultural institutions as well as thousands of internships and networking opportunities with the city's Fortune 500 companies. Study-abroad programs at our Rome and Beijing Centers provide engagement with the global community and economy.

While rigorous programs of research and study are one hallmark of a Jesuit education, we're not just preparing students for a career, we're preparing them for life. We challenge our students to learn broadly, to think critically, to serve generously, to lead with integrity, to respect diversity. We come from all faiths and ethnic and economic backgrounds, with a common purpose of building a better society.

Recognizing Loyola’s excellence in education, U.S.News and World Report has ranked Loyola consistently among the "top national universities" in its annual publications, and named the University a "best value" in its 2008 rankings.

Our faculty take a person-centered approach to education. They’re not just here to teach students what they know, they’re here to teach them to think critically and creatively and to reach for their own discoveries.
