PRIMARY FUNCTIONS: Under the supervision of Jess Gersony in the PLACE Lab at Smith College, conduct physiological research investigating northeastern trees as a postdoctoral researcher on the NSF-funded project “Investigating drought and cold resistance of northeastern US trees to inform ecological modeling and forest management practice” in collaboration with the University of New Hampshire (PI Scott Ollinger) and Alabama A & M University (PI Dawn Lemke). Engage and collaborate with various partners (e.g. forest managers, community members, other researchers and universities) in the project using a translational ecology approach.

Applications will begin being reviewed on March 12, 2023 and continue until the position is filled.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Co-lead and facilitate DEI initiatives in the lab, and create ways of integrating DEI into research process and projects

  • Collaborate with various community partners in project development and findings dissemination

  • Design and execute experiments using eco-physiological tools (e.g. Scholander pressure chambers, Vapro osmometers, Li-Cor instruments, sap-flux instruments)

  • Perform tree ring analysis using microscopy

  • Collect and analyze data

  • Write peer-reviewed scientific journal article(s) summarizing findings

  • Mentor graduate students, undergraduates and technicians across institutions

  • Create communication/art pieces related to the project.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: PhD in related field; experience with plant physiological equipment; experience with DEI initiatives; driver’s license preferred but not required.

SKILLS: Skills related to plant physiology research (either field or lab based); Strong organizational and writing skills; demonstrated ability to work collaboratively

This is a 2 year, limited term position with the possibility for extension.
