Job Details
· Performs gardening maintenance activities including cultivating, planting, deadheading, transplanting, watering, fertilizing, weeding, mowing, pruning trees, shrubs, hedges and maintaining gardens beds. Perform installation of annuals, perennials native plants, trees, and shrubs. Assists in the maintenance of outdoor fields and athletic facilities.
· Performs groundskeeping tasks. Removes dirt, trash, and debris from assigned areas and transports same to appropriate disposal facility. Utilizing gas powered or electric equipment, clean up and transport leaves, tree limbs etc. Address frequent service calls, and emergencies such a spill, animal issues. Patches asphalt, paver, or concrete areas. Perform painting, fence, and sign maintenance.
· Operates hand and power equipment such as mowers, tillers, sweepers, snow blowers, edgers, shovels, and small vehicles. Performs routine assembly, cleaning and maintenance of equipment as needed.
· Perform installation of annuals, perennials, native plants, shrubs, trees, following detailed plans and directions. Transport and install soils, mulches, compost, and other soil amendments. Responsible to clean up area when completed.
· Measures, mixes, and applies fertilizer, and other chemicals following specific instructions under direct supervision.
· Performs removal of snow and ice from assigned areas using hand and power snow removal equipment. Spreads salt, sand, and deicers to prevent slipping.
· Essential position required for snow removal, events, and other campus emergencies.
Qualifications and Skills
· Power tools and equipment; to perform work in, on around, under and over trees, shrubs and buildings and facilities; to work at heights up to 35 feet; to perform physical work requiring bending, stooping, reaching, carrying and frequent heavy lifting; to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.
Preferred
· High School diploma.
· Basic gardening knowledge, plant and weed identification.
· Have the ability to obtain within one (1) year from the start MDE Responsible Personnel Training (formerly the Green Card).
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience, and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education of experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
