Job Summary

The purpose of this position is to teach primarily English composition classes, at various levels according to the needs of the institution and department. Classes may include general composition, developmental composition, workplace writing, or literature. Additional responsibilities of the position include curriculum development, scheduled office hours, participation in department meetings, college committees and task groups, assessment of learning outcomes, advising of students for degree and career success, and other related duties as assigned by the administration.

Essential Functions

• Adhere to, promote and effectively teach official curricula as determined by the English department and approved by the college.
• Provide learning activities and appropriate evaluation of student progress toward attaining the learning outcomes and abilities set by the department and the college.
• Work successfully with students with academic difficulties to develop college level skills.
• Effectively participate in departmental and college teaching and learning activities.
• Effectively apply quality teaching and learning processes and principles.
• Maintain and submit appropriate individual student records as required.
• Apply electronic informational retrieval (EIR) technologies to effective teaching and learning.
• Develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, faculty and administration.
• Develop a professional improvement plan and participate in continuous improvement activities.
• Commit to equity-minded pedagogy and addressing the needs of disproportionately impacted populations as priorities of the department.
• Understand and be sensitive to meeting the needs of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic background of the students, community, and employee population.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

• A master's degree in English or Composition/Rhetoric from an accredited institution of graduate education, or a master's degree in a related discipline with significant graduate level course work in English or Composition/Rhetoric.
• Experience in and commitment to teach the process of essay and academic writing to diverse students.
• One year of teaching college-level English or two years as a graduate teaching assistant in a university composition program.
• Commitment to teaching students at all developmental levels.
• Ability to function in a multi-lingual and multi-cultural environment and support diversity and inclusion of all students, especially those of historically marginalized identity groups.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in assessing student learning outcomes as they relate to writing composition, and the ability to apply the results of assessment to improving course/program content and delivery.
• Demonstrable experience in teaching developmental writers, and knowledge of best practices in the field.
• Successful college teaching experience in transfer English in a community college setting.
• Ability to teach in e-learning modes including pure online delivery, hybrid and telecourses, and ability to enhance traditional classes with interactive television, multimedia presentations, and Internet resources.
• Demonstrated ability to work with diverse students with a wide range of skills and abilities.
• Demonstrated dedication to student success.
• Experience creating digital content (such as Word/PDF documents and web and learning management system content as appropriate to the role) in accessible formats.
• Experience in curriculum design and student outcome assessment.
• Experience working in or directing a peer-tutor writing center.
• Bilingual in Spanish and English.

Terms of Employment:
This is a full-time, tenure-track faculty position contracted on an annual basis. The salary for the position is determined by placement on the Wenatchee Valley College full-time faculty schedule (currently $57,283 – $63,983 for a 9-month, 175-day contract). Class assignments may include day, evening, and distance courses. This position is scheduled to begin Fall quarter (September) 2023.

Bargaining Unit:
This position has been designated as a bargaining unit position represented by the Association for Higher Education. Faculty workload, compensation and job expectations are defined by a contract negotiated between the faculty union and the WVC Board of Trustees.
