Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The Department of Computer Science is a major teaching department at UNC Chapel Hill with over 30 tenured/tenure track faculty, four teaching track faculty, eight research faculty, and 18 adjunct faculty, who serve more than a thousand undergraduate students and hundreds of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Teaching and research activities are currently assisted by nearly 200 graduate students. Twenty-four SHRA positions and eight EHRA-NF positions, including technical and administrative personnel, support the infrastructure of the department. The Department’s driving research ideal is collaboration – as it has been since the founding of the department in 1964. We believe that computer science’s greatest purpose is in working with other scientists to solve problems in their own disciplines. Therefore, we actively seek opportunities to generate new research with our colleagues and with scientists in other departments across campus, including in science, medicine, and the humanities. Numerous computer science faculty members have adjunct or joint appointments in other departments, lead large interdisciplinary research groups, and collaborate with colleagues from multiple universities across the Research Triangle, the United States, and even the world.

Position Summary:

This position is located in the Computer Science Department within the College of Arts and Sciences. The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill (UNC Chapel Hill) has established a School of Data Science and Society (SDSS) in 2022. This new school aims to contribute to the burgeoning field of data-oriented modeling and analysis, to solve pressing problems in healthcare, business, transportation, engineering, and other domains, and to study the implications of the usage of data science tools on society at large. Given the highly interdisciplinary nature of this field, the SDSS and the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) of UNC Chapel Hill are planning a cluster hire to attract outstanding tenure track faculty whose research and teaching interests lie at the intersection of data science and Mathematics (MATH), Statistics & Operations Research (STOR), or Computer Science (CS). These joint hires will have their tenure homes in the MATH, STOR, or CS Department in the CAS, depending on their core area of expertise, but will hold a half-time appointment at SDSS and contribute to their teaching and research mission as well. As a part of this overarching initiative to deepen and expand research and teaching related to data science, the Department of Computer Science invites applications at the rank of tenure track Assistant Professor, with a starting date of July 01, 2023. We are seeking candidates who embrace excellence in research and teaching, and have a commitment to diversity, mentoring and collaboration. The CS Department is strong in areas such as computer vision, computer systems, AI and machine learning, natural language processing, computational biology, computer security, medical image computing, robotics, real-time and embedded systems, and augmented and/or virtual reality. We are specifically seeking candidates from all of these areas, who have a strong connection to data-driven methods in their research and teaching and can build bridges between these areas and data science.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Candidates must possess a PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or closely a related field by the start date of the appointment. Applicants must also have a strong record of research, teaching, and service commensurate with the level of the appointment. The successful candidate will be expected to direct an independent research program supported by external funding, to develop and participate in curriculum building initiatives, and to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels in coordination with MATH, CS, STOR, CAS, and SDSS.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Prefer candidates who embrace excellence in research and teaching, and have a commitment to diversity, mentoring and collaboration. Seeking candidates with a strong research record in areas including, but not limited to, the following: computer vision, computer systems, AI and machine learning, natural language processing, computational biology, computer security, medical image computing, robotics, real-time and embedded systems, and augmented and/or virtual reality. Seeking candidates from all of these areas who have a strong connection to data-driven methods in their research and teaching and can build bridges between these areas and data science.

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities:

Not Applicable.

Special Instructions:

-Submit a list of 3 most important publications
-Submit a DEI Statement
-Publications and DEI Statement can be combined into one document and submitted as Other Document-Teaching Statement needed. No teaching evaluations needed.
-Provide names and contact information of 4 references
-For full consideration, please apply by March 1, 2023
