The India Studies Program at the University of Houston (UH) invites applications from outstanding scholars and teachers with an active agenda of research on India and a strong record of professional service to advance existing intellectual programming. Candidates may have PhDs in Cultural Anthropology, Comparative Literature, Cultural Studies, Sociology, History, Religious Studies, English, Gender Studies, Development Studies, Cultural Geography, or related disciplines to apply for this India Studies Postdoctoral Fellowship. The purpose of this position is to advance the program's research and teaching profile.

 

Successful candidates should demonstrate potential for publishing high-quality research. They will be expected to pursue an independent research agenda that complements the existing strengths of the program. As part of their duties, candidates will promote curricular development related to India Studies, which would potentially inform and expand the UH India Studies program offerings. Also integral to the role is a dedicated service commitment to the India Studies program that entails event organizing and archiving for public educational purposes. Special consideration will be given to scholars interested in India's contemporary political-economic and cultural issues. A strong candidate will have a demonstrated ability for online and in-person teaching and organizing events.

 

The fellow must be in residence in-person at the University of Houston during the academic year, organize and participate in the daily life and all events of the India Studies Program, teach one undergraduate course per semester related to India, and assist the program director with community outreach, event planning, and program development. The initial appointment will be for two years with an opportunity to apply for the position of visiting assistant professor for another year

 

The position begins September 1, 2023. A Ph.D. degree must be in hand by May 2023.
