Organization
The Honors College at the University of Houston invites applications for the promotion-eligible position of Instructional Assistant Professor to begin Fall 2023. The successful candidate will teach Honors sections of Introduction to Energy and Sustainability (ENRG 3310), Case Studies in Energy and Sustainability (ENRG 4320), plus one or more upper-level seminars related to their discipline and of their own design that contribute to the Energy and Sustainability minor. The Energy and Sustainability minor is an interdisciplinary study of the effects of different energy sources in society and environmental stewardship. Here we find technical, economic, environmental and political issues raised by the production and consumption of different sources of fuels. These range from the traditional environmental effects of energy use on air, water and land to the global challenges of climate change. Successful candidates can come from any disciplinary background, but applicants should demonstrate how their teaching and research interests lie within the field of energy and sustainability studies, broadly construed. In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will serve as the Associate Director of the Energy & Sustainability minor, which enrolls approximately 140 students. In this administrative role, the successful candidate will actively recruit students to the minor and develop and administer experiential learning programs, including study abroad, research, and other programs to engage minor students outside the classroom. Applicants must hold a PhD or other terminal degree. Experience working in the fields of energy or sustainability is a plus. As a national leader in curricular and co-curricular education, the Honors College cultivates a community of agile and innovative thinkers, engaged citizens, and lifelong learners. Its 2,500 students come from majors across the University to take intellectually challenging courses (generally taught as small seminars), minors, and programs that emphasize speaking and writing, encourage critical inquiry in disciplined conversation, and promote active learning and principled leadership. With over 45,000 students on the main campus and as one of the most culturally and ethnically diverse public universities in the nation, the University of Houston (www.uh.edu) is a Carnegie-Designated Tier One Public Research University. Houston is the fourth largest and the most ethnically diverse city in the country. It has multi-national industries, commercial centers, the largest medical center in the world, a robust arts community, professional sports, an entrepreneurial approach to new technologies, and is the world capital for petroleum exploration and energy. To apply, please submit an online application here that will include a letter of application, curriculum vitae, writing sample and the names and contact information for three letters of recommendation. The review of applications will begin January 17, 2023.The University of Houston is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action institution.
