Job Description:


Budget Title: Senior Staff Assistant (SL-3)


Salary: $58,000 - $60,000


The Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion invites applicants for the position of Assistant Director for Diversity Education. This is a full-time position that will supervise the coordinator for diversity education and a graduate student to provide support to faculty, staff and students throughout the campus, within the UDiversity Educational Institute. The Institute provides training and guidance for engagement around issues of equity, classroom and workplace inclusion and the importance of diversity in the greater community. The assistant director for diversity education reports to the Assistant Vice President for DEI.


The duties of the Assistant Director for Diversity Education is as follows:


  • Identify research and create content to develop workshops designed to enhance best practices in issues of diversity, equity and inclusion that will guide campus constituents to improve relations and work functions.
  • Partner with faculty and staff to further expand workshop offerings in the UDiversity Educational Institute.
  • Supervise a full time staff member, the coordinator of diversity education and a graduate student within the division.
  • Responsible for all administrative matters within the unit.
  • Coordinate meetings with campus constituents to consult with them regarding their potential training needs and scheduling workshops as appropriate.
  • Oversee the scheduling of diversity education classes and training.
  • Stay up to date with trends in diversity and keep the classes updated.
  • Respond to requests for training/classes and prepare the materials accordingly.
  • Oversee/supervise student employees in the unit.
  • Keep track of data for the unit and be able to analyze it for reporting. Use results to make any necessary adjustments to modules.
  • Must communicate effectively with campus constituencies as it relates to programming and trainings.
  • Deliver educational workshops.


Requirements:

  • Master's degree
  • Management and leadership experience
  • Experience in diversity education
  • Experience organizing and building custom classes/training sessions
  • Experience working collaboratively with various stakeholders and units within an organization

Preferred:


  • Experience in a higher education setting
  • Experience teaching classes, and designing curriculum for courses or educational workshops
  • Experience with adult education

History

Binghamton University opened its doors as Triple Cities College in 1946, to serve the needs of local veterans returning from service in World War II. Originally located in Endicott, N.Y., five miles west of the present campus, the fledgling school was a branch of Syracuse University.

Four years later, the college was incorporated into the State University of New York (SUNY) and renamed Harpur College in honor of Robert Harpur, a Colonial teacher, patriot and pioneer who helped settle the area west of Binghamton.

In 1961, the campus moved across the Susquehanna River to Vestal. Growing enrollment and a reputation for excellence soon led to the selection of Harpur College as one of four doctorate-granting University Centers in the SUNY system.

In 1965, the campus was formally designated the State University of New York at Binghamton, and in 1992, Binghamton University was adopted as our informal name.
