Job Details

The Department of Theatre at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign https://faa.illinois.edu/units/theatre invites applications for a Teaching Assistant Professor in Art and Entertainment Technology with a proposed start date of August 16, 2023. This is a full-time, non-tenure-track appointment centered on a nine-month academic year paid over twelve months. The initial appointment is a one-year contract with potential for renewal based on performance. Multi-year contracts typically follow promotion within this path.

Responsibilities

  • Art and Entertainment Technology program design and development.
  • Teaching courses in AET relevant to their area of expertise.
  • Advising AET students in their academic progress & AET practicum show assignments.
  • Facilitating the development of professional internship experiences.
  • The nominal load will be 80% teaching, 20% service with the understanding that project advising will be counted as teaching, and general advising and internship development will be counted as service.

    Qualifications

  • A creative vision for leading undergraduate technicians toward proficiency in the practice of new technologies in AET with a focus on craft, engineering techniques, and problem-solving skills.
  • Essential skills include an understanding of theatrical design aesthetics and principles, proficiency in CAD drafting, and knowledge of safety measures related to live events.
  • The ability to teach a range of courses in the areas of scenic technology, lighting and/or sound.
  • A passion for mentoring students and in making a positive impact toward diversity, inclusion, and equity in theatrical practice and education is essential.
  • Be able to communicate and collaborate effectively with production teams.
  • Demonstrate the potential for creative impact on the local community and/or national level.
  • MFA or significant professional experience in entertainment technology preferred.

    The successful candidate will join a dynamic scenic, lighting, and sound technology faculty of 8, along with a collaborative team at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.     As a part of the College of Fine and Applied Arts at Illinois, the Department of Theatre includes 24 faculty members, 12 Krannert Center Design and Technical faculty members, 3 academic staff, 7 campus affiliated faculty members, 130 undergraduates and more than 60 graduate students. The department offers BFA and MFA programs in acting; theatre studies; and design, technology, and management, as well an MA and PhD program in theatre research. The department is housed in the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, a multi-venue facility that operates collaboratively with theatre, dance, music, opera, and professional touring performances.     Salary
    Salary commensurate with experience, with a minimum for Teaching Assistant Professor level set at $60,000.

Research

Students and scholars find the University an ideal place to conduct research. The Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology is a model for interdisciplinary research, where eighteen research groups from sixteen University departments work within and across three broadly defined themes: biological intelligence, human-computer intelligent interaction, and molecular and electronic nanostructures. The University is also home to the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA).

Undergraduate Education

The University has a fundamental commitment to undergraduate education. Nearly 28,000 undergraduate students are enrolled in nine undergraduate divisions, which together offer some 4,000 courses in more than 150 fields of study.

Undergraduate admission is highly selective. In the 2001 freshman class, students in the middle 50% had ACT scores between 25 and 30 and ranked between the 83rd and 96th percentiles of their high school graduating classes.

The University enrolls over 9,000 graduate and professional students in more than 100 disciplines. It is among the top five universities in number of earned doctorates awarded annually in the United States.

Also integral to the University's mission is a commitment to public engagement. Each year about 65,000 Illinois residents participate in scores of conferences, institutes, courses, and workshops presented statewide. Research and class projects take students and professors off campus to share expertise and technical support with Illinois farmers, manufacturing firms, and businesses. In a typical year, student volunteers log more than 60,000 volunteer hours.

The Arts

A major center for the arts, the campus attracts dozens of nationally and internationally renowned artists each year to its widely acclaimed Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. The University also supports two major museums: the Krannert Art Museum and Kinkead Pavilion; and the Spurlock Museum, a museum of world history and culture. 

Other major facilities include the multipurpose Assembly Hall (16,500 seats); Memorial Stadium (70,000 seats), site of Big Ten Conference football games; and the Intramural-Physical Education Building, one of the largest recreational facilities of its kind on a university campus.
