Position Summary: Johnson County Community College is looking to fill a full-time faculty position in Humanities (with emphases listed below). JCCC is located in Overland Park, KS, the second largest city in the state of Kansas and part of the greater Kansas City Metro. JCCC is dedicated to creating and maintaining a rich cultural community, with an award-winning contemporary art museum, brand new fine arts building, and a center for the performing arts located on campus.


JCCC is looking for a diverse pool of applicants for a full-time faculty position in the Art History and Humanities department. Full-time faculty in this department, all of whom have doctorates in their fields, work to strike a balance between teaching and research and have strong professional connections with the regional visual and performing arts groups and institutions. JCCC is committed to increasing the diversity of our college community. Many of our 18,000 students are nontraditional, military veterans, immigrants, international, and first-generation college students. African American, Asian American, and Hispanic student populations are also growing.


The successful applicant for this job will teach the equivalent of 15 credit hours per semester in Humanities and Classical Mythology. Teaching assignments in Art History are also a possibility based on applicant qualifications. This person will perform other duties expected of full-time faculty, including maintaining scheduled office hours, developing and revising curriculum, developing and implementing course and program assessment of student learning outcomes, participating in department, division, and college meetings, serving on committees, and other duties as assigned. Teaching assignments will be combination of face-to-face (day or evening), hybrid or online, and are subject to change as needed.


Additional responsibilities:
• Provide extra and co-curricular opportunities for students interested in humanistic disciplines.
• Participate in the planning and administration of all departmental functions.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in humanities or a related humanistic discipline, such as the fine arts, art history or classics
  • Strong teaching ability
  • Expertise in a humanistic discipline
  • Comfort with adopting and using new technologies
  • Ability to teach sections of Introduction to Humanities and Classical Mythology
  • Two years’ documented successful teaching at the college level
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to the teaching mission of a comprehensive community college
  • Excellence in collaborating with faculty and students within and outside the discipline

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in a humanistic discipline
  • Master’s degree in art history
  • Ability to teach a general survey course in the Humanities / Fine Arts / Art History / Western and World Humanities, Classical
  • Mythology (focusing on myth as literature and later artistic representations of myth), and World Mythology (not necessarily all of these)
  • Demonstrated proficiency with online learning systems
  • Demonstrated understanding of academic culture

With more than 34,000 students enrolled in credit and continuing education classes each semester, Johnson County Community College is the state's third largest institution of higher education and the largest of its 19 community colleges.

JCCC offers a full range of undergraduate credit courses that form the first two years of most college curricula. The college has more than 100 transfer agreements with area colleges and universities that ensure admittance to specific programs such as business, engineering and education. JCCC students are able to begin their first two years of a four-year degree program here and complete that degree on schedule.

In addition, more than 50 one- and two-year career and certificate programs prepare students to enter the job market in high-employment fields. The college maintains extensive student support services such as computer labs, math labs, a writing center and a learning center.

JCCC’s continuing education program is the largest, most comprehensive in the Kansas City area. Through the Center for Business and Technology, participants can take courses in management and computer application or seminars and workshops that lead to professional certification and licensure. Personal enrichment classes, on topics ranging from gardening to money management, are also offered, while nationally and internationally performing and visual artists appear in the performance spaces and Gallery of Art in JCCC’s Carlsen Center.

The campus, centrally located in the county on 234 acres, opened in 1972. There are 18 major buildings on campus. Currently under construction are the Regnier Center and the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art.

JCCC’s full-time faculty and staff numbers about 875. Another 1,800 people work as adjunct faculty or part-time staff. Most faculty members have master’s degrees, and many have or are earning doctorates.

JCCC returns about $2.70 to the community for every tax dollar it collects. The college's total tangible economic impact on the community is more than $182 million annually.
