Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital Department of Anesthesia is nationally recognized for its quality outcomes and consistent clinical practices. Our cohesive team of pediatric certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) and pediatric anesthesiologists are experts in treating infants and children of all ages. This diverse group of anesthesia providers trained at esteemed institutions around the country and have brought their pediatric anesthesia expertise to Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital. Many of our anesthesia colleagues have advanced training and specialize in the areas of pain management and congenital heart disease.

At Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital, we have an extraordinary team of 20 CRNAs who work collaboratively with anesthesiologists delivering team anesthesia to our vast patient population including complex pediatric cases. Anesthetics are given in various locations throughout the hospital, including the main operating rooms, special procedures unit, radiology, cardiac operating rooms, cardiac catheterization labs, interventional radiology suite, and the intensive care units. Our expert CRNAs care for pediatric patients throughout the perioperative process from a preoperative assessment to intraoperative monitoring and anesthetic management to postoperative recovery and pain management.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Certified Nurse Anesthetist provides patient centered, specialized, evidence-based nursing care across the continuum through an inter-professional approach to treatment, research, education and advocacy. CRNA's are board-certified providers that assume responsibility and accountability for anesthesia and pain care services for pediatric patients at all acuity levels, in a variety of settings for procedures including, but not limited to, surgical, diagnostic, and therapeutic. Contributes to the goals of the department by being accountable for the delivery of compassionate and safe care within the scope of practice as defined by the Florida Board of Nursing and JHACH policy.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

-Evaluate the health condition of patients in providing safe, comprehensive clinical care
-Perform and document a thorough pre-anesthesia assessment and evaluation
-Obtain and document informed consent for the planned anesthetic intervention from the patient or legal guardian, or verify that informed consent has been obtained and documented by a qualified professional
-Formulate a patient-specific plan for anesthesia care
-Monitor, evaluate, and document the patient's physiologic condition as appropriate for the type of anesthesia and specific patient needs
-Document pertinent anesthesia-related information on the patient's medical record in an accurate, complete, legible, and timely manner
-Evaluate the patient's status and determine when it is safe to transfer the responsibility of care; accurately report the patient's condition, including all essential information, and transfer the responsibility of care to another qualified healthcare provider in a manner that assures continuity of care and patient safety
-Advance the knowledge of the interprofessional team through leading training and development programs to improve pediatric healthcare delivery and patient outcomes
-Constant consideration of developmental level of child and family when translating health information to support positive health outcomes
-Demonstrate understanding of internal and external CRNA practice rules, regulations and legislation to maintain compliance and certification

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Current Florida State Licensure as CRNA
  • Clinical Master's or Doctoral Degree in Nurse Anesthesia
  • Current BLS, PALS and ACLS
  • Current National Certification as Nurse Anesthetist .
