The University of Vermont’s School of the Arts in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) invites applications for an Associate Professor or Full Professor of Theatre to serve as Program Head of Theatre & Dance and Associate Director of the School of the Arts.

All candidates should have professional experience/rank to warrant appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. Successful candidates will also have demonstrated significant experience in university program/department leadership and administration. They share a clear passion for the Liberal Arts and a commitment to undergraduate-focused production practice, education, and mentorship.

This incoming Associate Director and Program Head will join the SoA in support of a small community of existing Theatre & Dance artist-scholars and highly skilled staff. This team is in an ongoing process of developing and implementing a sustainable and innovative strategic vision for a young joint-program formed of two longstanding previously separate theatre and dance departments, each with its own distinct curricular, pedagogical, and production needs.

Ideal candidates are committed to excellence in teaching and research, collaborative environments, transparency in team-based planning, and ensemble-based creation processes. Those with scholarship, practices, aesthetics, and pedagogies emphasizing social justice, sustainability, inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility are of particular interest.

Enthusiastic candidates with the relevant administrative background, professional rank, and academic theatre expertise are encouraged to apply regardless of practice specialty. Position Summary
The Program Head of Theatre & Dance will serve as a liaison between program faculty, staff, students, and SoA administration and CAS leadership. The Program Head oversees budget management, identifies and helps address capital projects/improvements, manages the program’s curriculum planning, among other administrative responsibilities. In their role as Associate Director, they will be part of the executive team of the School of the Arts, and work directly with the Executive Director of the School, with a specific portfolio of responsibilities that will advance the mission and goals of the SoA.

As Program Head, duties include support of a robust Theatre & Dance production season as an integral extension of our Liberal Arts curriculum. As such, this faculty member is expected to contribute season programming selections/aesthetics that are in conversation with innovative themes and content and offer dynamic and diverse opportunities for students. We are deeply committed to labor equity in an anti-racist, anti-sexist, anti-ableist, gender-affirming, body-positive, and consent-forward environment. The methodologies of this incoming faculty collaborator should also be reflective of such contemporary sensibilities in casting ethics, rehearsal and production practices, and communication strategies.

The candidate will also teach in their area of Theatre as part of the liberal arts-based undergraduate Theatre program. The standard teaching load in the College is 3-2, but course releases are given for administrative work as well as work on productions, in agreement with the Executive Director of the SoA and the Dean of the College.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: $80-100,000, commensurate with experience, $50,000 start up funds, course releases, and an excellent benefits package.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA & MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Terminal degree (PhD, MFA, or equivalent terminal degree) in theatre, performance studies, an area of theatrical
design/technology, and/or technical direction.
• Demonstrated success as a department chair, program head, or equivalent area of administrative leadership in a university or college setting; the candidate will have had sustained responsibility overseeing faculty/staff workload, budget management, curriculum planning and innovation, and student advising.
• Minimum of ten years of experience teaching at the
university/college level (at least 7 of which should be as full-time faculty).
• Demonstrated record of professional excellence as an artist and/or scholar; professional experience/rank to warrant appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
• Outstanding collaborative, organization, and communication skills.

ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Committed engagement with contemporary discourse and practices re: inclusion, diversity, equity, and access (I.D.E.A.) in creative arts infrastructures, aesthetics, and scholarship.
• Experience in and enthusiasm for implementing I.D.E.A. initiatives in curriculum design, pedagogy, collaborative methodologies, program policies, and leadership strategies.
• Multihyphenate/interdisciplinary expertise and teaching capabilities.
• A commitment to the value of original performance creation and supporting new work.
• Enthusiasm for team building, positive collaboration, and mentorship of early career faculty and undergraduate scholar/artists.
