Overview:

The vice president for diversity and inclusion will elevate the important work of transforming the university into a learning community where diversity and inclusion are woven throughout the fabric of the institution, where responsibility for inclusiveness extends to everyone on campus, and where the definition of inclusion is rooted in equity and social justice. The vice president will also guide Salem State’s emergence as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). The vice president will participate fully in the senior leadership of the university and serve on the President’s Executive Council; conduct an inventory of existing diversity and inclusion initiatives to identify strengths, gaps, and opportunities; craft and implement a strategic plan for inclusive excellence that coincides with the new university strategic plan (to be adopted in 2023); serve as a resource to schools, colleges, and divisions as they develop unit-level inclusive excellence strategic plans; develop and lead the university’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion; expand pathways for assessing, understanding, and improving the campus climate; and serve as an ambassador for the university and its commitment to diversity and inclusion externally in Salem, throughout the North Shore region, and beyond.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a field supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in an institution of higher education (e.g., multicultural education, sociology, critical race and/or gender studies, disability studies, American studies, anthropology, public policy, etc.)
  • 2-3 years of experience in institutional leadership
  • Experience in community building and collaborative partnerships

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in a field supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion leadership in an institution of higher education (e.g., higher education administration, multicultural education, sociology, critical race and/or gender studies, disability studies, American studies, anthropology, public policy, etc.)
  • Demonstrated deep and intersectional understanding of the dynamics of difference, privilege, and power
  • Successful experience leading diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in a higher education environment
  • Demonstrated experience leading institutional change
  • Demonstrated success at fostering dialogue with multiple constituencies, building coalitions, and achieving results
  • Bilingual or multilingual capacity

Office activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and interaction with computer equipment; occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 5-10 pounds.
